          GOLGOTHA THE EXGENERAL, ARRIVED"

                            - from the introductory animation
                              (Excuse the Japanese for the
                              grammer ...)

In Princess Crown, you control the actions of Queen Gradriel, a
13-year-old woman determined to crush the demonic forces
threatening her land, using the might of her sword and the magic
of the gems. By undertaking this quest, she hopes to prove
herself a legendary queen, much as her ancestors were (Valendia
Land is traditionally matriarchal).

Princess Crown is an Action RPG in the vein of classics such as
Sword of Vermilion and Ys Book 3, with a healty dose of Capcom's
AD&D arcade offerings thrown in to spice the whole affair up.
Everything takes place from a side-view, side-scrolling
perspective, including combat, town navigation, travelling, and
dungeon exploration. Sounds pretty plain, eh? Well, you haven't
seen how it LOOKS. This game is a brilliant testament to the 2D
prowess of the Saturn, featuring amazing animation, brilliant
color, and some of the best hand-drawn video game artwork this
side of a Capcom fighting title. Toss in a great leading
character, an incredible attention to detail, a unique fighting
engine for combat (with simple controls and tons of interesting
items), and a large world to explore, and you have one of the
best action-oriented RPGs available on ANY platform.

There is a fair amount of Japanese text in the game, especially
in the character dialogue. Many of the options and virtually all
of the text graphics are in English, including the splash screens
and end-of-battle tallies. The game is very playable despite the
Japanese dialog; if you don't mind missing out some humor in the
dialogue, you probably won't have any difficulty with this game.
Just in case, though, I've included a walkthrough if you're
having difficulty finding the next task to accomplish or dungeon
to visit.

The game itself centers its challenge around its combat engine,
as opposed to dexterity tests or puzzle solving, of which there
are few to none. As a result, this game plays like the
conjugation of Capcom's AD&D arcade titles with your average
side-scrolling RPG, such as Popful Mail. Unlike the AD&D titles,
though, there are many towns to visit with people aplenty to talk
with and a more extensive item management system. Unlike the
generic side-scrolling RPG, there are no jumping puzzles nor
platforming elements present. What this game does retain is some
fairly detailed hand-to-hand fighting, a traversable map to
explore (each 2D town/dungeon/area is linked by one of several 2D
paths, along which random encounters occur) in a relatively
non-linear sequence, a number of cinematic segues, and a whole
lot of combat-driven madcap fun.

Here is a brief synopsis of the story behind Princess Crown:
(WARNING: some spoilers included)

13-year old Gradriel is the youngest daughter of the
now-legendary Queen Elfrenne, who, 25 years ago, had slain the
demonic forces which threatened the peaceful kingdom of Valendia.
Despite having two older twin sisters, Eriel and Sidrael, (Eriel
is in blue, and Sidrael is in green), she is the heir to the
throne, Elfrenne having died recently. Gradriel is told by
visiting emissaries that all is not well in Valendia, and that
the evil creatures, which, after the defeat of the demons, had
gone into hibernation, were once again haranguing the land with
their misanthropic behaviors. Gradriel's chief councillor and
head wizard Jaistnai advises against her venturing out to correct
these problems, but impetuous Gradriel has other ideas. Slipping
out of the castle, she visits the many landmarks and villages of
Valendia Land. Meanwhile, an ancient grimoire of evil, Larva,
long since sealed up in Valenadine Castle, awakens after a long
slumber, calling to the forces of the archdemon Vogrod.
Possessing Eriel, it subverts her into an evil sorceress who
begins to wage magical mayhem on Valendia.

Eventually, Gradriel will face and defeat Evil Eriel, but the
Grimoire Larva will find a new host, and Eriel's twin, Sidrael,
will find herself in the clutches of Larva itself...

II. Combat and Controls

The primary play element of Princess Crown, other than the 2D
exploration and dialog-driven story advancement, is the combat
engine. As you progress through the game, you will be confronted
with a number of encounters, both preset and random. When this
occurs, your friendly pet fairy will drop Gradriel her
broadsword, your enemy will leap onto the screen, and combat will
occur. Get ready!

The D-pad is used in Street Fighter style, with the following
presses eliciting these effects:

        - Push foward/away: Gradiel walks forward/backward.
        - Pushing away during an enemy attack: Gradriel Guard's
against the foe's attack, reducing damage
significantly. Guarding will fail if Gradriel is out
of POWER, so, if you think the enemy might counter,
don't blow your energy aiming for that big combo, 'kay?
        - Double tap forward/away to dash in that direction.
        - Pushing up or up+diagonal will make Gradriel jump
          accordingly.
        - Pushing down on the D-pad will make Gradriel crouch. If
there is an item beneath her, she will pick it up if
there is space in her USE bag.

There are three primary buttons used in battle: the A, the B, and
the C button, as labelled on your pad. Press the A button to call
up the Item Wheel, which lists all the items in your USE bag (the
rest are stored in your extra bags). Use the D-pad to rotate the
wheel, so that the item you wish to use is in Gradriel's
outstretched hand, and hit the C button. To drop an item, press
(and hold) DOWN on the D-pad and press the C button. A goblin
comes and snatches any item that has been left on the ground for
a while, anywhere.  (Omnipresence? ^_^ )  You carry the USE bag;
Aria your fairy companion carries the extra bags, so they can't
be accessed during battle.

The B button is used to cancel any selection, and to Evade in
battle. Hold down the B button to prepare to Evade; when the
enemy starts to attack, the Evasion menu will automatically
appear, and you can select one of two Evasive actions: either the
Side Step or the Back Step. The Side Step will make Gradriel dash
'around' ('through' on the 2D projection) the enemy, allowing her
to attack it from the back. Back Step enables Gradriel to take a
flying leap back to a safer distance. Your POWER decreases in
proportion to the duration for which the B button is being
pressed. If you're out of POWER, you can't Evade.

The C button is the "Attack" button, which, when used with the
proper D-Pad motion or timing, produces a variety of sword
slashes and attacks:
        - Pressing the C button once: A single, vertical slash.
        - Pressing C button while jumping: A powerful aerial
          slash!
        - Pressing the C button while crouching: A dashing
through slash - a relatively safe maneuver.
        - Pressing the C button repeatedly will let you perfrom
multiple slashes in rapid succession, for as long as
you have POWER remaining. Be careful that the enemy
sometimes does a counter in the midst of your combo.
        - Pressing and holding C will execute a VERY powerful
Rising Slash which will hit multiple times and consume
most of your POWER bar. (You cannot do it if your POWER
bar is totally empty, but you can do it even if it is
otherwise very low. The same with all other actions
which expend POWER.) Tack it on after a 1 or 2 hit
combo for BIG damage! If this move is used as the
finishing blow, a Street Fighter-esque sunburst will
          occur - too cool!
        - When knocked down, hold UP + C to execute a Reversal
Slash for big damage! This will also leave Gradriel out
of breath, just as the Rising Slash did.

After using the Rising Slash or the Reveral Slash, Gradriel will
be exhausted until the POWER bar charges up to a certain level.
If you're under the effect of a POWER boost item, the duration of
the exhaustion will be much shorter.

Guarding with a special shield equipped will inflict damage on
the opponent according to the special shield. Certain items, such
as daggers, axes, holy water, and bombs, may be thrown in combat,
and magic gems and scrolls may also be used, much to your
opponent's dismay. Be careful, though: some opponents may decide
to use one of these items on you! There are other semi-permanent
equipment items besides shields; they will enhance your ability
in various aspects, such as jumping ability, strength, defense,
and speed.

During non-combat scenes, the buttons have the following effect:

        On the D-Pad:
        - Left/Right: Move Gradriel left/right on the screen.
        - Double tap Left/Right: Run in the appropriate direction.
        - Down: Crouch to pick an item up. Or just crouch and
giggle at her pimpin' look. You decide.
        - Up: Enter a building/hallway/room, or pick a fruit from
          a tree.

A - Open the Item Wheel.
B - Cancel the current selection.
C - Action Button - use this to confirm a selection, to
talk, or to use an item selected from the Item Wheel.
L - Calls up the "Extra Window" , where you can transfer
items between your bags, or swap whole bags
(convenient when cooking in a safe area). Press the
R button here to view your special items and game
stats. The left and right ends of an area (except on
board a ship), small dungeon rooms, and tower
corridors with a chasm are safe areas where enemies
won't appear. You can safely organize your items,
including swapping entire bags to use
non-combat-oriented items, in these areas. It is
recommended that you do not move items necessary for
combat out of your USE bag outside safe areas: not
            even right after a battle.
R - Calls up a map of the world/dungeon. When the world
map is open, holding down the R button enables you to
scroll the map with the D-pad. Note that on the map,
a path that tilts to the right, even for a small
angle, is usually accessed by leaving town on the
right hand side exit. Same for left.

If you are good enough to complete the game, you will be able to
play as Edward, Portgus, and Proserpina. All of them have a
mini-adventure to complete, which become available as extra books
in the initial game load area, where you direct a young girl to
bring a book to her grandmother. After completing the Story of
Gradriel, the Story of Edward will appear as a second book to be
picked up. Complete it, and Portgus's and Proserpina's books
become available. Complete them both and the final book shows
up. Each of these ancillary characters' quests are significantly
shorter than that of Gradriel (obviously), but each has a full
range of combat maneuvers which look incredibly cool. Check out
Portgus, especially - his Rapier technique looks like that of
Samurai Shodown's Charlotte, with incredible animation. In the
initial game load screen, you can also take the cat to the
grandmother to select stereo/monaural sound, and to adjust
message speed (default setting is "fast", so don't fiddle with
it).

Gradriel's book takes about 24 hours to play. Edward's book and
Proserpina's book takes about 6 hours each. Portgus's book takes
about 3. The last book is a short conclusion to the story which
I'm not going to spoil in this FAQ.

III. Items, Equipment, and Miscellanea

As the manual states, items are a MAJOR factor affecting the
outcome and flow of a battle. Not only equipment and healing
items, but also gems, scrolls, potions and rods, and even other
items all have an important effect, if used wisely. Since you
will pick up more items than you can carry, and get more money
than you will need, actively use items and have fun!

Treasure Menu - The "Treasure Menu" after defeating an enemy
lists the items that he might drop if you knock him down during
the fight. If you see an item that you really want, try to knock
him down as many times as possible during future encounters! The
item in the treasure chest may be other than those listed in the
Treasure Menu (e.g. Centaur).

Spoiler warning: This section contains some detailed information
on items and their effects. Though most of the info is contained
in the manual or the on-line explanations, some is not and is
told by villagers you meet, while some is not explicitly
mentioned at all and has been discovered through experimenting.
If you don't want to be told what the items do, skip this
section.

- EQUIPMENT -

All of the items listed under EQUIPMENT has an Endurance rating,
which can be increased with "E+1" scrolls. The Endurance is reduced
by 1 each time the item is knocked off from you. When the Endurance
is reduced to zero, the item breaks.

No matter how high the endurance, you might still lose a piece of
equipment if a goblin comes and snatches it before you can
recover the item when it has been knocked off from you, so be
careful ... This has happened to me several times. It is
usually a good idea to carry some item (Magic Gems, Mage Rod,
etc.) which will help you recover dropped equipment. Remember
that Invincibility Potions are unfit for this purpose!

Cursed equipment: sometimes a piece of equipment that you pick
up from an enemy is cursed. If you equip it, you won't be able
to take it off. The curse is automatically dispelled the next
time you win a battle, but during that battle, the cursed
equipment (kind of) works in reverse! For example, if you equip
a cursed Flight Ring, you won't be able to jump at all; if you
equip a cursed shield, when you guard, you will still take normal
damage! This can be a big handicap in an important battle. A
Dispel Scroll can be used to remove the curse immediately. If
you don't have a Dispel Scroll, try on new equipment near the end
of a battle.

Warrior Glove (grey) - Attack power up 10%.
Ogre Glove (green) - Attack power up 20%.
Silver Gauntlet - Attack power up 30%.
Golden Gauntlet - Increases the chance of critical hits,
including critical hits with Gradriel's Rising Slash! You'll
notice that, on occasions, when executing her Rising Slash,
Gradriel says something (in a word balloon with text) before
she executes the Slash: that's a critical hit.
Lucky Pendant (purple) - reduces damage received by 20% .
Magic Pendant (blue) - reduces damage received by 50% ! An
    excellent piece of equipment.
Elf Boots (with leaves) - automates Evasion. Instead of
deducting POWER when the B button is held down, the Evasion
menu is opened automatically whenever the enemy attacks (and
you're not taking some other action), with some expenditure
of POWER (which is non-recoverable even if you cancel the
Evasion). Rather costly in terms of POWER, but quite helpful
    when your POWER is low.
Blink Boots (plain) - increases your speed in combat.
Angel Boots (winged) - jumps higher.
Ring of Alchemy (green) - a gold piece appears with each swing of
    the sword.
Flight Ring (purple) - Double-jumping is enabled. Very convenient.
Hot Ring (red) - halves Ice damage received.
Cold Ring (blue) - halves Fire damage received.
Spiked Shield - Foe takes damage when his attack is Guarded by
                Gradriel.
Frozen Eye Shield - Foe is turned to ice when his attack is
    Guarded by Gradriel.
Flaming Dragon Shield - Foe gets zorched with flame when his
    attack is Guarded by Gradriel.
Thief Bracelet (with jewels) - Items are picked up automatically
when Gradriel passes over them; no need to kneel.
Warrior Bracelet (no jewels) - Automates Guarding.

- GEMS -

A magic gem can be cast 3 times, but some of the charges may
already have been used when you find the gem. In Dwarf Land (and
in Volga Town), there is a gem shop where you can buy magic gems,
or enchant mundane gems for a very good price.

Should you run into difficulty fighting a certain kind of
monster, a gem or two (perhaps 3 or 4, in the case of a boss) is
usually the simplest solution.

Opal (Gorgon) - Shoots a strafing ray which, when it strikes a
foe, turns them to stone and does damage.
Ruby (Vulcan) - Hurls a large fireball at a 45 degree angle
towards the ground, which explodes on contact. Very powerful
    against undead.
Amethyst (Thor) - Makes lightning roar from the sky and hit the
    opponent multiple times.
Sapphire (Sindra) - Hurls icicles at the opponent, freezing them.
Emerald (Star) - A rain of meteors drops from the sky, mangling
    your foe.
Diamond (Holy) - Heals Gradriel significantly, as well as does
damage to undead (and small damage to demons).

Mana Essence (orange-red liquid in delicate bottle)
  - enchants a mundane gem, or restores a magic gem to 3 charges.

- RODS -

A rod breaks when used twice in a battle. Otherwise, you can use
it once every battle for as many battles as you like. Rods are
handy against random enemies, but I usually replace them with
other items when fighting bosses.

Witch Rod (skull) - turns a weak enemy into a hamster or a little
bird, thus ending the battle. The chance of success depends
on your level and your enemy's. An _essential_ item for
impatient players when they backtrack. If you find the
random battles becoming too easy, and you have lots of excess
money, you should buy multiple copies.
Mage Rod (ruby) - throws 3 daggers at the enemy.
Curse Rod (eye) - prohibits the enemy from Guarding or Evading
    for a while.
Wind Rod (swirls) - Blows Gradriel and the enemy apart.
Goblin Rod (goblin smiley) - Summons a goblin, who flies across
the screen and knocks down the enemy for a dropped item.

- Throwing Weapons -
(New daggers and axes can be thrown 3 times, but they have to
be picked up after each use.)

Warrior Dagger (brown hilt) - Crappy damage and goes in a
    straight line.
Magic Dagger (purple hilt) - Better damage and goes in a straight
line. Knocks down the foe for a dropped item.
Throwing Axe - Good damage, but arcs. Good against flying or
               frequently jumping foes.
Bomb - KABOOM! Great damage (especially versus ghouls), but
has a delayed detonation after hitting the ground.
Holy Water (blue liquid in delicate bottle)
  - Sends a rippling streak of holy flame across the ground when
it strikes. Good damage, but only against Undead (and demons).

- Scrolls -
(single use items of attack or enchantment.)

GOM - ("rubber") Changes your equipment to rubber, so that it
can't be knocked off (or damaged) during the fight. Does not
work on shields, because a shield doesn't work when turned
into rubber! Null if you change equipment.
Earthquake (M8) - Earthquake! Drops a big rock on the foe for
    good damage.
FiRE - Imbues Gradriel's sword with fire, enabling extra damage
to foes weak against fire. (Don't use it against
       Dragons! You'll do /less/ damage.)
BoLT - Imbues Gradriel's sword with lightning energy, enabling
extra damage to foes weak against lightning.
GOLD - It's the Midas Touch! Turn your foe to solid gold and chop
       gold coins off of him.
Mirror (MiR) - Create a mirror image of Gradriel, ala Morrigan's
EX Specials in Nightwarriors. Double damage, twice the fun!
EXiT - Teleports Gradriel out of a dungeon. Otherwise, you
typically have to walk your way back out when doing side
    quests.
Return (ReT) - Takes Gradriel back in time and space to her last
save. She returns to the inn, keeping her current experience
and (USE/extra) bag items, but any major events and event
items (including Candies) are reset. (Thanks to Yasu for
this helpful piece of info.) The game isn't that hard, so I
find Return Scrolls not much useful; perhaps one may use it
to return to the quest after going shopping in another town?
E+1 - Adds 1 point of Endurance to any piece of equipment. A
maximum Endurance of +9 (8 scrolls required) is possible.
EYE - Identifies an item as cursed or otherwise. Iff the last
    /hiragana/ looks like a left-right flipped small /lambda/,
the equipment is NOT cursed. The only multiple-use scroll.
Dispell (DiS) - Removes the curse from any piece of ill-affected
    equipment.
NEW - When used on an item that has multiple uses, it restores it
to the full 3 charges. Example: Using this scroll on a gem
with 1 use will bring it back up to 3 uses, or, using it on a
half-eaten piece of meat will restore it to an uneaten
condition. However, it won't restore scrap or garbage which
can no longer be used (in the original way), such as an empty
bottle. It does not work on Rods (during battle) either.
Recommended usage is on Invincibility potions.
Reflect (ReF) - Immunity to stoning attacks for one battle.
Obtained in Goblin Market during the Basilisk quest.
Holy Symbol - GIGA-damage to any undead foe. Moderate damage to
    demons.

- Food Items -

Advice: In this game, it takes longer to munch and swallow food
items than to use other items. If you're hit while you're
eating, you'll drop the food without any healing effect, and the
food may still has one bite deducted from its uses. (Luckily,
you don't suffer additional damage for choking.) Don't be overly
reliant on healing: use all the items available to you. It is
often a good idea to use another item to keep the enemy at bay
while you eat.

Certain food items, namely corn, meat, fish, and dodo eggs, are
raw and cannot be eaten as they are. There are two ways you can
cook your raw food items yourself. With a pan and some spice (a
bag of small round fruits), you can grill the food. With a pot
and some "soup flavor" (a bag of yellow powder), you can make
soup. Soup is the better item in battle because it boosts POWER
in additional to healing HP. Failing these, you can take the
food to be fried in a pub (or bakery) for a fixed 30 gold (talk
to pub owner, first option). You can also buy takeout food for
16 to 52 gold (second option). The price is reflective of the
healing potency of the food.

To cook, select the pan or pot, then select the raw food item.
(The spice or soup flavor must also be in the USE bag.)
Occasionally, the attempt to cook food fails, with your pan or
pot breaking. A broken pan or pot can be thrown at the enemy.

IMPORTANT: If you eat grilled food when your HP is full, your
maximum HP is increased (usually by 1 point per bite). I use
most of my grilled food this way.

Every food items lasts 3 bites when new. No shop would ever buy
your half-eaten leftovers, for obvious reasons! ^_^

Heart Fruit - about 10 to 25 points healed. Weak. Can be picked
from surrounding trees in some woods.
Fruit Cake - medium healing, and takes much munching to consume.
Hamburger - medium healing
Elixir Fruit (yellow) - medium healing, and leaves a seed with
which you can grow more fruits (during battle).
Mushroom - POWER boost (full POWER) for about 19 seconds. You
can 'stack' multiple dosage to lengthen the duration to up to
    30 seconds.
Milk - same as Mushroom, but takes a bit less time to swallow.
Fried Egg on Toast - Good healing. The first bite (eating the
egg) increases maximum HP by 1 if eaten when HP is full. The
two remaining bites (eating the bread) won't increase max HP.
Grilled Corn - Good healing.
Grilled Fish - Good healing, and leaves a fish skeleton for use
    as a puny throwing weapon.
(Grilled) Gourmet Meat - A beefy surprise guaranteed to restore
HP. Very strong, and leaves a bone for you to throw at the
    enemy.
(Grilled) Dragon Steak - (Looks the same as Gourmet meat.) Very
potent, and rare. If you eat dragon meat when your HP is
full, your max HP is increased by 2 per bite.
Soup - All kinds of soup look the same, but can be told apart by
reading the Japanese descriptions. All give you good healing
and a POWER boost. With a pot of Meatball Soup, you have
nothing to fear! Soup is not sold in pubs.
Yggdrasill Fruit (golden grapes) - The best healing item, hands
down. Fully restores HP with a POWER boost.

- Potions -

Potions can be drunk in battle. A new potion is good for 3 sips.
Be aware that Potion drinking is somewhat slow, just like eating
food. Despite this, the effectiveness of Potions should not be
underestimated in critical battles (such as boss fights).

Although there are no official regulations against doping, please
show some restraint. ^_^ If you drink more than one potion at the
same time, you'll be poisoned and take damage. Don't do that!

You can ask the Potion maker in Valenadine town (and other
places) to make potions, if you have the right ingredients plus
20 gold. The required ingredients are listed after the name, as
numbers. Look at the bottom of p.22 of the manual, and number
the pictures from left to right.

There is an interesting oversight in the game. Items held by a
left-facing person, such as a shopkeeper, are flipped left-right.
In the case of Attack and Defense potions, this makes their
labels incomprehensible. On the other hand, the writings on
scrolls always display properly.

Invincibility Potion (Dot-in-a-Circle/Sun) - 1 & 4 - Temporary
Invincibility for 20 seconds. Note that you cannot pick up
items when Invincibility is in effect. Unquestionably
powerful against bosses. Rare, and so is herb #4. However,
with the Trust Drop, the fairy drops it occasionally.
Potion of Negate Pain (spirals) - 1 & 2 - Negates pain (but not
injury) for 20 seconds. You become almost impossible to
knock down, and can even counterattack in the midst of the
enemy's combo! This is very effective unless the enemy has
bad status attacks (ice or petrification). One of my
favorite boss strategies is to combine this (when I don't
have an Invincibility Potion) with a Mirror Scroll and some
power-boosting food. ^_^ I call this combo 'fever'.
Stomach Potion - 3 - you can eat/drink faster for 30 seconds.
    Nice.
Attack Potion (AT) - 2 - Increases Gradriel's damage potential
    for 30 seconds.
Defense Potion (DF) - 1 & 3 - Lessens damage taken by Gradriel
    for 30 seconds.
Goblin Juice (skull) - NA - Strong, yucky drink made by Goblins.
Gives a POWER boost. However, human drinkers lose half of
their HP! Can be bought from the rightmost house in Goblin
    Market.

- Potion Ingredients -

See the last section for their use. The herbs are recognized by
the shapes of their leaves. Ingredients are not sold in shops,
and can only be picked up from enemies.

Insect powder (#1) - needed for the more powerful potions.
Herb with zigzagging-edged leaves (#2) - needed for potions which
    enhance your offensive ability.
Herb with round-edged leaves (#3) - needed for potions which
enhance your ability to survive for longer in a fight.
Herb with pointed leaves (#4) - needed to make the Potion of
Invincibility. Rare until you solve a certain side quest.

- Seeds -

There are four kinds of seeds. Their appearances are all the
same, and you can identify them only by reading the Japanese
descriptions. You can plant a seed only in battle. A seed takes
15 seconds to yield after planting. The plant may be squashed if
someone lands on it when being knocked down.

Elixir Seed - bears Elixir fruits
Healing Plant Seed - yields healing flowers. Stand in front of
the flowers to recover from your wounds. The flowers last
for 10 seconds. Very powerful /if/ you're there to sniff.
Power Plant Seed - yields power flowers. Stand in front of the
flowers to gain a POWER boost.
Bomb Seed - yields Bombs! Beware: bombs have no eyes!

- Candies -
(viewed by hitting L, then R. These items are found in the first
row of items on this screen.)

Powers up your fairy friend. There are 8 pieces in the game.
Listed below are the effects each piece has:

Notice Drop: When you enter an area, Aria sometimes teaches you
    what enemy types will appear.
Battle Drop: when you're in trouble, Aria flies in and attack
    your enemy.
Kind Drop: Aria drops a random item in battle.
Trust Drop: Aria drops a random potion in battle.
Attack Drop: Aria attacks with a combo for more damage.
Remove Drop: Aria removes any cursed equipment you put on
    outside battle.
Unit Drop: Aria's friends join her in ganging up on the enemy.
Cure Drop: Aria offers a little healing in battle.

- Quest Items -
(viewed by hitting L, then R. These items are found in the second
row of items on this screen.)

Music Score #1, #2, #3 - Give these to the Bard on the very left
    side of Valenadine Town.
Magic Gem of Earth (green) - Give this to Haindel west of Knelt.
Time Gem - use this to time travel.
Ancient Key - use this to open the Sealed Cave south of Cemeteryth.
Memento Ring - Return this to its owner in the Magic School.
Broken Sword - Return this to its owner in Volga Town.

IV. The Bestiary

In this section, I will list each monster, and the best fighting
tactics for beating it. Boss monsters will have a [BOSS] tag
after their name.

Spoiler warning: If you want to figure out the fighting strategy
on your own, please skip this section.

Note: This section has largely not been updated.

KWEIN [Practice] - An armored knight. He's just there to give
you some initial training with the fighting system.

OCHRE JELLY - A cute little blob of goo. High-level variants have
a VERY damaging Critical Attack, though, so don't underestimate
these twerps. When they float towards you after a bounce, hit B
when they're almost on your face (yech!) to Option Select and
follow up with a Side Step and a combo.

MYCONID - A very cute little animated mushroom. These cute
fellers, despite their diminuative stature, can be a real pain in
the plate mail, even when they are low-level. When it hits you,
it'll affect you with illusion, which however will do real
damage. You cannot hit the illusion, but you can dispel it by
hitting the mushroom itself. Dash Attacks work great on these
sneaky buggers.

DODOH - An angry flightless bird. Its attacks are short-range and
do very little damage. Just beat the living crud out of it.
Alternate a B press during your combos (flutter rapidly between B
and C presses) to easily Option Select its Counters. Hee hee.

Higher level Dodohs are another matter entirely, since they have
a pair of damaging Criticals - one is a Counter (OS through it,
when you see COUNTER! flash on-screen), and a Buddy Summon where
a flock of Dodohs will tumble from off-screen to flatten poor
Gradriel. Whack the Dodoh to shut him up before he finishes his
call to arms.

BARBARIAN - A large, fur-wearing warrior. This guy will use gem
magic and throwing axes during battle, as well as munch on healing
items, depending on his level. Use regular jumping attacks, and,
when he gears up from a butt crush or a thrust attack, whack him
with a combo, followed with a Rising Slash. His item uses are
slow, so try to interrupt them.

GHOUL - Tough. Very tough. Avoid jumping attacks except when his
pukes acid, or risk getting hit in his Claws O' Fury combo. If
you see the words "Critical" flash onscreen, GUARD. Otherwise,
you can face up to 100+ points of damage from his Thorny Tomb
critical. Using B to Option Select out of his multihitters is a
great idea - you'll save yourself a lot of grief. Conversely, if
you have an Ankh Scroll, USE it, and avoid this nasty fight
altogether.

GHOST - Flying nasty. He zooms all over the screen, periodically
lunging at you with his Tail Spike attack. After decimating half
of his life bar, he loses his pumpkin mask and gets some nastier
attacks, such as the Grim Reaper special and the Spectral
Mourner. You can take out the lantern shots he fires in his
pumpkinhead form by swiping at them with your sword - the same
can be done to take out the tragic Spectral Mourner. When he
turns into the Grim Reaper, Back Step or Guard. He will remain
invincible for a short while.

GOBLINS - A flying threesome who enjoy taunting you. Ignore their
cute antics and floor them with jumping slashes. They'll
occasionally tag out, but don't worry - just treat all three like
a single entity and whack away. Be sure to Guard when you see
them raise their mallets for 2-hit comboes, and lay into them
when they start taunting you.

Later levels have them knocking your items from you, and
whistling to summon their compatriots. Just OS through the latter
when you hear the whistle.

CENTAUR - Half horse, half cherub with a penchant for archery.
Not too tough, although, when you see him fire an arrow upward,
dash out of the way or be conked on the head by the fowl he
gunned out of the air (this is really hilarious to watch, BTW).
Just Guard his arrow attacks and whack him with combos, or
conversely, leap over his smaller arrow spreads and hit him with
a jumping slash. When he charges, guard in the OPPOSING director
or be bowled over.

FROGGER - Cute little frog with a few karate skills. He'll
counter frequently, but he isn't particularly tough, thanks to
having almost ZERO Hit Points. Just dash as he leaps over you and
pound him with ground attacks. To avoid the counters, keep your
combos short, and never start from the air.

BANDITS - A duo of scruffy rogues who attack one at a time.
They'll use throwing knives and quaff wine to heal themselves
during the round, but their low individual HP makes them pretty
nonthreatening foes. Guard when they slash, and counter with a
combo culminating in a Rising Slash. They'll back off and allow
Gradriel to get her breath back after she finishes the combo.

PIRATES - Same as the Bandits, but have a powerful Cannon Special
where the currently inactive Pirate runs of the screen, hauls in
a big cannon, and rains explosive shells on you. This move has a
big wind-up time, so start Guarding early.

DOPPELGANGER [BOSS] - A grinning shadowdemon with artistic
aspirations - he paints himself to look (and fight) like you!
Fortunately, he fights like a really wussy form of you by the
time you encounter him, so he's pretty much meat ripe for the
slaughter. Amuse yourself by practicing the techniques his AI
can't do on him.

DRAGON [BOSS] - A pain in the behind at ANY level. Although the
Dragon is the second boss you'll fight, these scaly baddies crop
up every now and then as conventional enemies (and as boss
encounters) throughout the game. Don't be bewitched by their
amazing animation - these guys are TOUGH. Use jumping attacks
whenever possible, especially when they are winding up to flame
you. If you suspect they're going to do a bite attack, Guard, and
retaliate with a Rising Slash combo. Having Leaf Boots or a Ruby
Ring pays off in spades for this fight. Using Ice or Lightning
Magic is also an excellent idea.

ICE DRAGON - Like the DRAGON, only it uses ice-based attacks and
is weak against fire. This fellow isn't seen until later in the
game.

PROSPERPINA [BOSS] - Irritating, but not too tough. When she
mounts her broom, jumping slash her out of the air. Having Angel
Boots or an Amethyst (Double Jump) Ring makes her even easier. On
the ground, dash attack her when she is at range, and Guard her
rushing attacks and Flame Hex attack. Follow up with a combo.

TARANTULA - Wussy boss. A well-timed jumping slash will wax him
when it takes to the trees. As ever, Option Select or back dash
when he tries to web you. Otherwise, charge your power bar and
combo, combo, combo!

Later encounters have this guy showing up at higher levels, where
he uses his Web Critical more frequently. When you see the words
"Critical" flash on-screen, either do a quick double-tap back or
Guard.

BASILISK [BOSS] - With the Reflect scroll, it shouldn't be much
difficult. Without one, its Petrifying Ray attacks can be quite
threatening, and it likes to Guard and Counter a lot, so it is
best to go for a quick win with some good items, such as Star
Gems and Sindra Gems. Beware of its Critical Hit Stoning Gaze
(and you thought Cyclop's Super in XvsSF was impressive) which
does up to 100 points of damage and stoning!

EVIL SEED [BOSS] - A nasty puppet with a circular saw for a hand.
When he starts bouncing around, use a jumping slash to hammer him
down. Using bombs, Fire Magic, and a FiRE scroll will put this
guy to rest, permanently. Or, use holy magic such as Holy Symbol
Scrolls.

SLAVE WOOD - the non-boss form of the EVIL SEED.

POLTERGEIST + EVIL SEED [BOSS] - Eyaaaaugh! This boss first
appears as a giant ghost who summons and manipulates a variety of
items, including a doll, a set of plates, a chair, and more,
which he spins in an expanding and contracting wheel about him.
If these items hit you, they can do some serious hurt, so dash in
and out with short combos. When he attacks using his body, jump
straight up and slash. After you deplete his HP, he'll summon a
EVIL SEED body and animate it - handle it just like you did the
previous EVIL SEED boss from the Yggdrasil area. If you should
find the battle with the Poltergeist difficult, you can hunt
Centaurs near Lowgrove for Diamonds. With a Holy Gem or two, you
can't lose.

POLTERGEIST - A fat ghost similar to the boss one, only lacking
the ability to animate an EVIL SEED body after initial defeat. He
has a nasty Counter where he spews poisonous ether at you if your
combo is poorly timed, so keep the combos short and peck at him
with jumping attacks and single slashes.

GEIST ARMOR - Headless armor packing a large sword. Not too
tough, but beware his Critical! When you see the words "Critical"
flash on-screen, get back! His sword will become a size roughly
equivalent to 3/4 of the screen in length, and he'll swing it at
you for MEGA-damage. However, when he isn't executing this
attack, he's a pushover - just peck away with jumping slashes,
dashing slashes, and the occasional combo. If you've mastered the
option select (or have Leaf Boots), he's utterly negligible.

CHAOTIC EYE - A Beholder-type floating eye that uses magic for
attacks. These guys are a PAIN - thank Gawd they're a rare
encounter. They like to use Ice and Lightning Magic, and the
occasional Stoning Ray. What makes them really tough is the fact
that they are hard to combo - most slashes result in them falling
to the ground, and leaving an explosive skin behind. Be sure to
whack the newly-shedded skin before continuing your attack, or
you may find yourself bumping into it at the wrong time - ouch!
Keep Guarding when not hitting them with jumping attacks. Use
Lightning Magic or throwing weapons whenever possible. Heal
frequently. Option Select with the B button when this feller
winds up for a fireball, or suffer the big hurt.

CAPTAIN BIGHOOK [BOSS] - A large, ill-tempered pirate with a
giant hook for a hand and a pogo spring for a pegleg. Guard his
rolling attack or suffer big damage. When he starts bouncing
around, a well-timed jumping slash will keep him earthbound. If
he goes Critical, Guard. He's not too tough if you keep your
Guard up or have Leaf Boots equipped to Option Select his rolling
crush.

EVIL ERIEL [BOSS] - Eriel, Gradriel's sister, turned into a
rather well- -endowed succubus by the Grimoire Larva.
Challenging, but easily doable if you keep your Guard up and time
your jumping attacks appropriately. The best time to strike is
after the Larva Chomp attack - dash in and combo her. When she
uses the Flaming Runes attack or summons the scorpions, Guard
until the attack has completely left the screen - both of them
have residual effects. Hit her with Meteor Magic frequently, and
use the Leaf Boots to Option Select through the Scorpion attacks.
If you have the Leaf Boots equipped, Side Stepping through the
Scorpions to combo her works brutally well. Conversely, if you've
mastered the timing for an Option Select (tricky as the Scorpions
have no evident wind-up), you can avoid using the Leaf Boots and
use the slot for, say, a Purple Pendant.

EVIL GOLGOTHA [BOSS] - General Golgotha, only bad. He fights like
a Geist Armor, only without the Giant Sword Critical. Unlike a
Geist Armor, he does quite a bit more damage, and has an
Exploding Meteor Critical, as well as being able to launch over
three Ground Spike specials from the air in immediate succession.
While not tough, don't underestimate him. Free him from the
Grimoire Larva's power by getting in close and comboing away - do
NOT, I repeat, do NOT try to fight him at range, or you'll be
sucking down Criticals and Ground Spikes.

DEMON - A cthonic nasty with a skull mask and a prehensile
tongue, as well as nasty claws. Unlike the Boss Demons, these
guys don't use Gem Magic, at least those below Level 20.

BLUE DEMON - Same as a regular ol' Demon, only uses Ice-based
attacks and is usually encountered at Levels above 20. It uses
Gem Magic infrequently. Also unlike the standard Demon, it has a
Heart Flare Critical, which can do BIG damage. Hit B to OS as
soon as you see the words "CRITICAL" appear, and Dash Back, or
suffer! Dragon Shields and Vulcan (Red) Gems are great for
supplementary damage and defense.

SKULG [BOSS] - A powerful demon, and one of the most difficult
fights in the game. He uses magic quickly and frequently, has
high-damage attacks, is tough to combo, and, worst of all, he
heals himself halfway through the fight! He hates Meteor Magic,
so have several Emeralds charged before the fight starts. Use the
Frozen Eye Shield to return some of his damage - just make sure
you use a GOM scroll to keep the Shield from breaking during the
battle. Be sure you're over level 30 and have at least 4 Item Use
slots equipped with healing items before tackling him, though.
Option Select through his Demon Claw or his Flame Pentacle with a
Side Step and whack him before he can use the cover the attack
provides to use a Gem. You cannot interrupt his Life Recovery, so
don't even bother. Oh, and if you have a Purple Pendant, USE IT.
OR ELSE.

BLOODY [BOSS] - A demon lieutenant with red skin and tusks so big
they obscure his vision. Like SKULG, he regenerates himself
halfway through the battle, effectively giving him an extra 50 or
so percent extra HP besides what his bar says. Bloody hates
ice-based attacks, so use the Sapphire or have a Frozen Eye
shield equipped. However, unlike Skulg, he has the multi-hit
Heart Flare Critical of the Blue Demons, and Counters like crazy.

GRIFFON - A decidedly female bird-lion combination, with tons of
wind-based and scratching attacks. This creature is a MAJOR
pain-in-the-feathered-arse, since it combos you for BIG damage
and loves to play keep away. It'll frequently Option Select
through your combos, making it hard to execute any major beat
down. If you use a Sapphire Rod, the Griffon won't be able to OS
or block, making the fight a little easier.

VOGROD [BOSS] - Vicious. Standard sword attacks do little damage,
so organize your items for an item-centered battle. He can
easily corner trap you and pound you to death; use items to
prevent him from cornering you in the first place, and Evade. He
drops good items, so try to knock him down. Ankh Scrolls work
great against him. Save a good Potion (Invincibility or Negate
Pain) for this battle!

NECRO-SAMANSA [BOSS] - A ridiculously busty undead female
assassin. She looks rather like the results of a coupling between
Jedah and Morrigan from Darkstalkers, after breast-augmentation
surgery and estrogen mainlining. She's only of middling
difficulty to fight - she's weak against OS Sidestepping and
Jumping Slashes. She'll counter long combos, though, and walking
into her attacks is completely foolhardy. Watch out for her Ghost
Critical or her jump-in Kick Combo, both of which can leech 80 or
more HP from a Level 62 Gradriel. Her second Critical, where a
nasty Dracolich bursts out of her belly, can be easily OS'd into
a Dash Back.

SIRENE [BOSS] - No problem if you have good items, such as a
Bolt Scroll or some Thor Gems. Evade her Sirene Song attack, or
you'll be dazzled for 5 seconds or so. Most of the time, she'll
use the Song or her Gale attack to push you away, keeping you
from getting close to hurt her. When she does attack, it'll be as
a Dash attack (or as her Ocean Call Critical, where a friend
appears to assist her), so hammer her as she passes by. She may
not be easy to hit, so bring gems and potions along.

EVIL GRADRIEL [BOSS] - At this point, you should be about Level
60 or so, and have enough HP to weather the worst of magical
attacks any foe can dish out long enough to heal. Be sure you
have plenty of Holy Gems going into this fight, because Evil
Gradriel attacks exclusively with magical attacks. Her Serpent
Magic is the most common, which is best blocked instead of OSing,
since the Side Step can get you nailed with the Serpents' tails
and Dash Back doesn't do any good since the Serpents go full
screen. Just block the Serpent attacks (and thwack the Fire
Dragons she'll occasionally summon). Keep your combos short
(she'll counter on the third hit, so two should be tops) and rely
on Jumping Slashes to win. Eventually, you'll peck away her
health and she'll fall, enabling you to transform into her by
pressing L+R during subsequent battles! (See Walkthrough for more
info)

EVIL LEON [BOSS] - Yuck. Next to Vogrod, this guy is one of the
worst fights in the game. Like Gradriel, all of his attacks are
magical in nature, meaning he can hurt you no matter WHERE you
are on the screen. His Thorn Beauty (ecchi!) and Thorn Counter
attacks are plain annoying, and can, should all hits connect, do
over 108 points of damage! OS Side Step towards him when you see
the Thorn Beauty start up (it's rather obvious ^_^), and go for
BIG (6 hit+) combo into a Rising Slash. 7 or so of those and he
should fall - unfortunately, in the interim, you'll have to deal
with frequent ice and stoning attacks. Use a ReF scroll if you
have one to help out a bit. Dash at him (double tap forward) when
he teleports away to sneak a couple hits in. Jumping Slashes are
begging for a Thorn Counter, so use them sparingly.

LARVA [FINAL BOSS] - Great Mother of Jesus, is this guy HUGE!
Like Apocalypse in X-Men vs Street Fighter, he fights from the
background, taking up almost two whole screens. He has 4 arms in
all corners of the screen, each with 200 HP. Kill one, and it'll
drop 3 items. The Head, which isn't always attackable, has 500
HP. Destroy it and Larva will die. Easier said than done,
though, as the Arms (starting from the upper left and moving
clockwise) have the powers (and then some) of each Elemental
Spell in the game - Earth, Wind, Fire, and Ice. The Head does an
occasional lightning attack and spits an explosive fireball which
knocks Gradriel down. The basic strategy for this battle is to
Jumping Slash his head whener possible, and, when he recedes into
the background to blast magic shots at you, BLOCK. As for the
rest of the time, crouch or block when he charges his Lightning
attack. OS through the attacks of the fire and ice arms so that
you are standing in front of the arm and behind the hand, and
combo. This is a long, difficult fight which is manageable if you
have some good healing items left over after defeating Leon. Or,
better yet, Invincibility potions.

V. Walkthrough (Gradriel scenario)

Spoiler warning: This updated version is more detailed. It is
intended to help players who can't read Japanese. Thus, I have
added summeries of the storyline, so that the player knows what
is going on. This also means that there may be spoilers.

In this game, as you talk to characters and gain information on
new places, the path to these places will be added to the map
(view with the R button), and you can now visit the place (there
are exceptions). This is usually signified by colored text in
the dialogue. This version of the FAQ now contains information
on exactly which characters you need to talk to in order to move
on, and where you need to go (and why), at each point of your
quest. (The intention is to eliminate the tediousness of
repeatedly talking to everybody, since I can't imagine how it can
be fun if one can't read what is being said. If you can read
Japanese, it is recommended that you do not use this walkthrough
on your first playing.) If I've made a mistake and left out
somebody, try talking to everybody in the village, and also
please report the error to me.

After the (skippable) opening sequence on the heroic history of
your mother, Elfaran, you begin the game with your crowning
ceremony in the throne room in Valenadine Castle. After that,
you listen to messengers from your kingdom: Portgus the pirate is
ravishing port town Leeland; the kids in Nutsbill have been
kidnapped by fairies; dragons are attacking human habitation in
Dorangora. You arrange for the problems to be settled; in
particular, you're sending the Guards, the elite troops of the
country, to deal with the dragons. After that, Kwein, the leader
of the Guards, personally trains you in swordsmanship. (Don't
lose the match, or you'll have to repeat it until you win.) You
then retire to your bedroom. However, you want to go out and see
the truth of your kingdom with your own eyes, and join the front
line in solving the problems of your countrymen, as your mother
the good previous queen did. Jestonai the court wizard won't
like that, so you decide to sneak out of the castle.

Before leaving, you want to say good night to your sisters in the
two rooms next door. Eriel is studying hard to try to find a
cure for the disease that is troubling Sidrael your other sister,
who gives you a Lucky Pendent. They are twins; because it is
believed that twins will bring the ill fate of division to the
kingdom, you become the only viable heir to the throne despite
your young age of 13. After talking to both sisters, you can now
go downstairs. (You can save game with the priest in the
leftmost room on 4th floor.) On the way, don't forget to pick up
a Defense Potion in the leftmost room on second floor. Walk out
of the castle gate until the Guard stops you. As you come back
in, you are hailed by Aria the fairy. She urges you to go to
Nutsbill and find out the truth about the kidnapping of the kids,
and she helps you out of the castle by distracting the Guard.
You leave the castle and go to Valenadine Town.

You pass Valenadine Town on your way to Nutsbill. It's a busy
town with good facilities, including a shop which sells useful
E+1 scrolls. The Bard at the left end of town is in search of
the legendary music score, created by the goddess of music. It
is his dream to play the piece. Make a note of this, as it leads
to a side quest.

Carry on west to Nutsbill. The townsfolks believe that their
kids have been kidnapped by the fairies. The man on the left end
of the town teaches you the way to Fairy Wood south of the
village. Leave by the east exit and go there. The fairies tell
you that they've searched everywhere except for a forest in the
north. Visit said forest, and you'll find Proserpina's hut.
Confront Proserpina and beat her, and the kids will be changed
back. Head back to the village and converse with the mayor in
the house near the center of the village; he teaches you the path
west to Dorangora. Free up a USE bag space before the
conversation to receive a magic ruby as your reward. (You can
talk again if you have a full bag the first time.) Take the
opportunity to talk to the rightmost fairy in Fairy Wood as well.
She'll express her gratitude with a candy (Battle Drop). Also,
visit the bakery for a free cake. The lady also tells you that
something good would happen if you taste specialty foods from all
around the land. Quite a few rewards for your first completed
quest!

Ignoring warnings about fierce dragons, you go west to Dorangora.
Talk to the young man in green, who teaches you the westward path
to the mountains where the dragons are. Also, if you talk to a
big standing guy in the pub, he'll tell you how a Cold Ring saved
his butt in his last fight against a dragon. Talk to him again,
and he'll teach you where you can buy a Cold Ring: in the witch's
shop past Goblin Market (check the map). The ring helps greatly
in the ensuing fight against the dragon.

In the mountains, you are attacked by a dragon (auto event), but
a young man, Edward the Dragon-slayer, appears in time and saves
you. You head back to the village, where you in turn save a
little girl by defeating a dragon. Prepare for a tough fight,
despite that the Dragon is wounded. After defeating the dragon,
the Guards arrive and rid the village of the reptiles, and you
can now move on. The villagers have sent a messenger to the
desert village of Akberstep, to ask Leon the mage for help
against the dragons, but he never comes back, so you're heading
there to check. Before you leave, talk to the woman in blue with
an apron, who tells you about a dragon which has swallowed a
Music Score. Its lair is in the mountains at the end of a path
which branches off the road to Cemeteryth. The dragon is strong
and it is not wounded (of course), so you'll need some good
items. If you kill him, you recover the Music Score #1 which you
should give to the Bard in Valenadine Town. However, there are
no substantial rewards for this quest until you get all three
parts of the Music Score, so there is no hurry to do it.

Let's proceed with the main quest. Go through Cemeteryth to the
village of Lowgrove, a farming village within the forest. The
rightmost boy in the village tells you that they're having Goblin
problems. Enter the farm pasture through an entrance just right
of the bakery, and dispatch the goblins to win an extra bag.
The man near the bakery teaches you the path to Unicorn Forest.

You can't go to Akberstep as yet, so you go to Unicorn Forest. A
voluptuous red-haired sorceress is tormenting the little Unicorn,
and his mother asks you for help. When you challenge the
sorceress, she summons a giant Tarantula to deal with you. Kill
the Tarantula, and the Sorceress flees, and the Unicorns will
thank you for saving them.

Back to Lowgrove. Having saved the Unicorns, you can now go to
Akberstep, and can also buy Milk from the goat hut. Talk to the
rightmost girl in the village, who tells you that a priest from
Cemeteryth has moved into the house to the right of the bakery.
Talk to the priest: a fat ghost has been stirring up trouble in
Cemeteryth and chased him out! If you go to Cemeteryth and
defeat the Poltergeist boss, the priest will return and set up
shop. (Just walk out of the village, then walk back in.) He
sells Holy Symbol Scrolls, among other things. This also opens
the road to Pumpkin House and the Sealed Cave to the south.

When you arrive in Akberstep, the scene is a surprise: everyone
has been petrified! In the pub, you find a little girl hiding
there. She tells you that Leon has gone to the desert to deal
with the Basilisk which is causing the disaster. (If you need to
rest or save game, talk to her again.) The entrance to the
desert is just to the right of the pub. When you enter, the
first thing you see is Leon - petrified. Talk to him. He got
stoned by the Basilisk because his Reflect Scroll has been
snatched by Goblins. You can just charge ahead now and try to
beat the Basilisk if you have very good items, but the safer
route is to turn back and first recover the Reflect Scroll from
Goblin Market. (Check the map, between Nutsbill and Dorangora.)

There are two routes to Goblin Market - back through Lowgrove and
Cemeteryth, or onward through Valenadine and Nutsbill. Note that
the road to Valenadine leaves town on the left. Go by whichever
route you prefer. (The route through Valenadine is shorter.)

Once you arrive at Goblin Market, go to the shop and demand the
Reflect Scroll from the shopkeeper (select the second option from
the menu). He asks you to wait outside. But it's his entire
gang waiting outside to clobber you! Teach them a good lesson,
and he'll yield the Reflect Scroll. (In case you need more, you
can buy them from the Goblin just outside the shop.)

Armed with the scroll, you are now ready to tackle the Basilisk.
At the beginning of the fight, use the ReF scroll, and slam that
bad boy down. This cures the villagers. Before you leave, talk
to the mayor in the house just to the right of the entrance to
the desert. He tells you about the Yggdrasill tree to the east
of Fairy Wood. Yggdrasill Fruits are the best healing items in
the game. Also, if you have excess money, spend it on Grilled
Corn here in Akberstep. Corn gives you the most max HP growth
for your (excess) money (until very late in the game). When
you're set, head off east toward the city of Cadho Badho.

If you are going to visit the Yggdrasill tree, it is recommended
that you walk to Cadho Badho first and teleport to Valenadine
from there, rather than walking to Valenadine directly: this
route saves some walking, eventually. Some monster is draining
power from the roots of the tree, and causing it to wither.
Enter the tree and defeat the Evil Seed in its root. For saving
the tree, you get some Yggdrasill Fruits and an extra bag (yes!).
You can come back for more fruits after some time, probably
around when you defeat Doppleganger.

Cadho Badho is a large city which is divided into three areas,
inhabited by warriors (left), merchants (top), and wizards
(right) respectively. The areas are joined by "back alleys",
where bandits and other nasty creatures may appear and attack
passer-bys. You may even run into Proserpina! Talk to the boy
in green running around the shop and the inn in the merchants'
area; he tells you about a dangerous Sirene attacking people near
Titania Lake south-east of the wizards' area. When you visit the
lake, you find Edward there defending the Sirene. Contrary to
everyone's expectation, Ondinu the Sirene is nice and tame.
Someone is spreading false rumors, to make Ondinu cry in sorrow
and get the gems formed by her tears. You decide to find out
who. By the way, the wizard in the house to the right of the inn
in the wizards' area gives you a Return scroll, and teaches you
how to use it (see the section on "Items"). Also, don't forget
to get one or more Witch Rods from the magic shop, either now or
later. It's almost a must.

Returning to the city, you meet a father and son preparing to go
out and hunt for the Sirene, in the alley joining the wizards'
and the merchants' areas. They tell you that they've heard about
the Sirene from two guys in the alley joining the merchants' and
the warriors' areas. When those two guys see you, they split and
run in two directions. You may choose to chase after either
one.

In the warriors' area, talk to the little girl near the sword
statue. She tells you that she saw a guy transforming right in
front of her eyes! Follow her hint to the pub and talk to the
warrior at the counter. He tells you that he just met a girl
with a man's voice! Go outside and talk to the girl near the
right end of the area. She flees as she sees you. You catch
her, and force /him/ to tell you who is behind him.

Alternatively, you may chase after the other guy into the
merchants' area. Talk to the first merchant you meet. He tells
you that he just witnessed a short, fat guy transforming into a
handsome young man! Then talk to the well-dressed girl in front
of the shop. She saw a handsome man entering the empty house.
Now enter the empty house just to the right of the first
merchant. You unveil the handsome man's disguise and make him
talk.

Either way, you learn that the voluptuous red-haired sorceress is
the bad girl, and that she has her hideout in a cave along the
western route between Cadho Badho and Akberstep. This will be
your next stop.

So, off to the cave we trek. In the deepest room, you will find
the sorceress, who will summon a high-level Barbarian to put an
end to you. Put him out of action, and the sorceress will flee.
You head back to Ondinu's Cave (auto event) to conclude the
incident with Edward and Ondinu. After that, before heading off
for Cadho Badho, turn back and pay Ondinu one last visit. She
will tell you that she feels the presence of a powerful item that
will help you on your quest. The item is in a cave just off the
route between Titania Lake and Cadho Badho. This is an optional
quest. If you enter the cave and defeat the Tarantula in the
deepest room, you earn the Kind Drop.

At this time, you can head north to the port town of Leeland.
Portugus used to be a "Robin Hood" kind of pirate, but recently
he has been attacking innocent merchant ships. Do the routine
shopping and save game before going to the dock, where an
enthusiastic sailor announces that you are the 10000th guest, and
ushers you onto his ship for some sight-seeing around. Along
with you on board are a honeymoon couple (from Knelt, a remote
village) and a fine gentleman, Parsons. Unfortunately, out at
sea, the ship runs into pirates, and everyone is taken hostage to
Pirate Isle.

On Pirate Isle, you meet a fat man who claims to be Portgus the
pirate. Suddenly, Parsons reveals his own true identity - he is
the real Portgus! It turns out that the fat guy, Captain
Bighook, has been doing bad deeds in Portgus's name! Portgus
knocked his forged self off to nowhere with a single blow. ^_^
You then enter the cave to rescue the capatured honeymoon couple
and the sailors. After freeing the two pairs of captives, you
come back to the entrance, only to be captured by the pirates.
They are going to throw you overboard to feed the sharks!
Fortunately Portgus appears just in time to save you. You now
have to fight a boss battle with Captain Bighook while Portgus
takes on the other pirates. Win the battle and sail home.

Back to Leeland. You now have checked out all three incidents
reported in the meetings at the very beginning of the game
(remember?), so it's time to return to the castle. (What truth
you have witnessed, so different from the stories you hear in the
castle!) First check out the shop, which has received an update
in its inventory, now that the pirates have been dealt with.
When you're ready, leave Leeland from the left exit and head west
to Valenadine Town.

Back to Valenadine Castle. In the throne room, Jestonai tells
you that Eriel has disappeared. Just then, Kwein returns from a
search mission and reports that Eriel was seen in a tower in the
Black Forest. The red-haired sorceress was guarding the entrance
to the tower, and she stated that the queen should go to the
tower alone if she wants Eriel back. Black Forest is mid-way
between Valenadine Town and Leeland.

Before you leave, you may want to challenge the dungeon at the
training grounds. The stationary Guard there tells you that
Jestonai has summoned a monster in the deepest room, and is using
the dungeon as a challenge for prospective knights. You get the
Trust Drop if you defeat the Ghoul. (Say hello to Invincibility
Potions!)

You head for the tower. You meet Leon at the entrance. Climb
the tower (it's inhabited by a fair number of undead foes). At
the top, the red-haired sorceress is waiting for you. You are
shocked to find out that the sorceress is Eriel, possessed by the
Grimoire Larva. She has opened the gate to the demonic realms,
and is trying to use you (with royal blood) to revive Volgrod,
the Demon King! You fight her. After the battle, Leon arrives
and frees Eriel from Larva. However, it's too late: the gate has
been opened, and monsters are coming through it and assaulting
Valenadine Castle! They are going for Sidrael (with royal blood)
for the revival of Volgrod.

You hurry back to the castle (auto event). Organize your items
for battle and head upstairs, where you'll catch the demon Skulg
as he is heading for Sidrael. Fight him. You win the battle,
but Skulg kidnaps Sidrael and flees.

The attackers withdraw along with Skulg. Go and meet Edward at
the castle gate, then come back and talk to Jestonai. You have
to rescue Sidrael from the demonic realms, and the tower in Black
Forest seems to be the only route to there. Climb the tower
again. At the top, a Demon is guarding the gate. Fight it.
Before he dies, he casts a spell to destroy the gate. The way
being closed, you return to the castle (auto event).

Jestonai tells you that there may be another way to the demonic
realms. In the demonic invasion 25 years ago, the Demons came
from over the sea, apparently from a place called Earth on Truse
Tera. The sailors in Leeland may know about the place, so you
head there, hopiong also to find a ship and sail to the place.

In Leeland, a sailor has been arrested for theft. First talk to
either Portgus or the tropically-dressed rightmost girl: they
think the arrested sailor is innocent. Then go to the dock and
talk to his colleague, who tells you that he suspects the painter
in an old mansion. You enter it vie an opening just to the left
of the honeymoon couple. Get to the Doppleganger at the top
floor. He can animate his paintings, and the crimes have been
performed by his creation! Defeat him and prove the innocence of
the sailor. He'll be released, and will be glad to man your ship
to Earth on Truse Tera.

Now, you are ready to set sail to Earth on Truse Tera.
Alternatively, at this point, there are a few side quests
available to you. The Donfan gang is burgling many people in
Cadho Badho, so you head towards the city.

In the merchants' area, talk to the well-dressed girl in front of
the shop. She's the daughter of the leader of the merchants, and
she has sent her maid (household assistant) Jessie to Dwarf Land
to do some shopping, but she has not returned. When you go to
Dwarf Land, you'll see Jessie (she's obvious). Tell her that her
employer wants her home (first option). When you return to Cadho
Badho, the leader's daughter will be happy, and she'll ask her
father to let you enter the secret shop. It's in the house near
the right end of the merchant's area, guarded by a merchant.
There you can buy some excellent items as well as visit the pub.

(Thanks to Yasu for this info.) In the wizards' area, the
student on the right in the Magic School has lost to the Donfan
gang a magic ring, which is a memento of his grandfather. His
teacher tells you that the Donfan gang has been spotted by a
parrot when operating in the house to the right of the sword
statue in the warriors' area. You learn from the parrot that the
gang is based in Knelt. In Knelt, the father and daughter in the
pub tells you that they've seen suspicious people in a side
street. Enter the side street between the pub and the shop.
Fight Donfan (a Barbarian). When you kill him, he drops a ring.
Return the ring to the student in the Magic School, and he'll
reward you with the Attack Drop.

On your way to Knelt, you pass through Frogger Pond. (You can
rest and save game by talking to the stationary Frogger near the
middle.) The Froggers are starving because a nasty Myconid is
poisoning the insects. Talk to the rightmost Frogger, and
promise to deal with the Myconid (first option). He tells you
that the Myconid is in a forest east of the village. Go there,
kill it, and return to receive an Ancient Key, which will unlock
the Sealed Cave south of Cemeteryth. Defeat the Geist Armor at
the bottom to recover Music Score #2.

Enough sidetracking already; let's move on with the main quest of
rescuing Sidrael. In Leeland, go to the dock and talk to the
sailor twice (select the first option the second time). Your
voyage is highlighted by a few battles, but they're not any
difficult in particular. You arrive and enter the dungeon.
There's an inn in the leftmost room on floor B3, but there is no
real need to use it this time. You just arrive at the exit in
the bottom in time to witness your dear Edward being killed by
the demon Bloody! As the demon tries to kill you too, your
unicorn friend intervenes and teleports you away. She tells you
that Haindel the Sage Dragon may know of a way to resurrect
Edward. Haindel is in a cave just west of Knelt, where you'll be
deposited.

Haindel indicates that there may be a way to go back to the time
before Edward was killed. But he always demands a price for an
answer. He requires you to get the Magic Gem of Earth from the
Dwarf King, so off to Dwarf Land you go.

Talk to the Dwarf King in the castle. The Dwarfs are miserable
because a giant spider has moved into their mine and is
preventing them from mining. Get rid of the Tarantula in the gem
mine. Just as you are reporting to the King (auto event), a
Dwarf walks in and announces the discovery of a very beautiful
gem, and the King decides that it will be your reward. It is
nothing but the Magic Gem of Earth. After clearing the mine, you
may take a break from the main game and play a few rounds of
Truck Race, if you wish. (Use the C button to speed up, which
costs power which can be replenished by mushrooms. Push UP to
jump. If you win the race, you get the money you picked up on
the way, plus a random [?] prize item.)

Take the gem to Haindel. He tells you about the Demon's Tower to
the east of Dwarf Land. The demon Shadow is there, and he has
the Time Gem which will allow you to save Edward. After leaving
Haindel's room, if you turn back and talk to him again, he asks
you to bring him a Vulcan Gem (Magic Ruby). Bring him a new one,
and he tells you that he feels the presence of a useful item in a
tower off the path between Unicorn Forest and Lowgrove. You'll
earn the Notice Drop if you defeat the Griffon at the top of the
tower. This is a side quest, too. (Thanks to Yasu for info.)

Before going to the Demon Tower, make sure that you have a
handsome stock of good items. You can buy Gourmet Meat in the
pub in Knelt; if you have excess money, it is advisible that you
build up your max HP with those. If you're low on gems
(especially Holy Gems), buy some at the gem shop in Dwarf Land.
(Enchant all mundane gems you have, too.) If you've used up your
stock of Yggdrasill Fruits, a second yield should be available by
now, though there is some walking involved. When you're all set,
leave Dwarf Land through the right exit. Once you clear the
Demon Tower, you'll have very limited access to shops for quite a
while.

In the Demon Tower, there are some nice shops, such as one
selling New Scrolls in the first room on third floor. Ascend to
the top and battle Shadow. When he is defeated, he uses the Time
Gem to banish you - to 25 years ago.

There will be an auto event scene portraying how Captain Golgotha
got possessed by Grimoire Larva when trying to save Kwein from
the same fate. After that, you'll find yourself in Valenadine
Town. Use the town facilities as necessary, and talk to these 4
persons: the woman in front of the Potion Maker, the old man to
the right of the pub, the young man in green walking around in
front of the shop, and the old man in red near the right end of
town. From them you gather /when/ you are in: your mother
Elfaran's era. Try to leave town for the castle, then take a
step to the left. A young man will appear and report that the
castle is being assaulted by demons! You hurry to the castle.

Arriving at the castle, you witness your mother beat the crap out
of a Blue Demon. Organize your items for /two/ consecutive boss
battles, then go to the throne room, where Elfaran is attacked
and wounded by Evil Golgotha. Ever the filial vanguard, you rush
in and confront Golgotha yourself. Wax him, and he'll return to
his true self. Unfortunately, defeating the Grimoire Larva brings
Bloody, quite enraged by the turn of events. You fight him.
Once defeated, he'll drop the Time Gem. Gradriel uses the Time
Gem to banish Bloody, but Golgotha wakes up just at that moment
and instinctively leaps at him, and gets banished along.

Elfaran congratulates you on a job well done, and entitles you
Heroine of the Country. Jestonai comes up and asks you to visit
his room. He expains to you the power of the Time Gem, and its
user-friendliness: just lift it and wish yourself to be any time
and place. Organize your items and save the game (leftmost room
on 4th floor), and go to the guest room (your future room), where
you use the Time Gem to save Edward.

Just in time! Edward gets ready to engage Bloody, but our girl
Graddy jumps in - once again, you gotta fight Bloody. Kicking
his butt sends him running for the dungeon exit, but Edward jumps
in and slays him with a secret technique. Edward is now
officially saved, thank to Gradriel messing around with the
time-space continuum.

Having defeated Vogrod's lieutenant, Edward and Gradriel open the
sealed Gate to Bindfaire, the demon realms. They run right into
Skulg; Gradriel heads off for Vogrod's Tower while Edward
attempts to avenge his father. Get ready for a 10+ floor tall
tower, with some convoluted paths and mean encounters such as Ice
Dragons. In case you are running low on food, the shop in the
second room on 6th floor sells Meatball Soup! At the top, you
fight Vogrod.

Having forced Vogrod to retreat and rescued Sidrael, you return
to the Castle (auto event). Sidrael reports that Vogrod has
regained his humane heart through long years of living in chains.
In the night, a lone Griffon attacks the castle, and you have to
fight it (in front of the main gate) before you can save game.
You attribute the unusual monster attack and a sudden large
earthquake to the leak of evil energy through the gate in Earth
on Truse Tera, so again you go and climb Vogrod's Tower!

Before you do so, however, you may travel around your kingdom
again for some side-questing. At this time, there are three more
side quests available.

In Cadho Badho, talk to the 2nd Warrior to the right of the sword
statue: he tells you that their leader has gone adventuring in a
dungeon beneath the statue! At the bottom of the dungeon, the
leader is having trouble with a Ghost, so help him. He found a
letter his ancestor (who joined hands with a Wizard in defeating
the Demon King in the past) left for him. The letter advises him
to befriend the Wizards, and he agree, so you become his
ambassador to the leader of the Wizards. When you go to the
Wizards' area and talk to the wizard some distance to the right
of the wand statue, you find out that their leader is doing
exactly the same thing! You enter the dungeon beneath the wand
statue, find the leader, help him with the same trouble, and
learn about his ancestor's letter with similar content! You
convince him to follow his ancestor's advice, and it is a happy
ending for everybody. Oh, and by the way, you receive the Unit
Drop from the thankful leaders. (Thanks to Yasu for info.)

In Knelt, the mage in the room to the left of the inn has been
doing research on potions. This time, when trying to make an
Invincibility potion, he made a big mistake and turned himself
into a Frogger! He needs to eat a herb with pointed leaves (i.e.
Herb #4) to change back. He tells you that the rare herb grows
in abundance in the plains off the road between Knelt and Dwarf
Land. Go there if you don't happen to be in possession of a Herb
#4, and help yourself to a plant (or more, if you need them for
making Invincibility Potions). Give one to the mage, and he'll
express his gratitude with Music Score #3. Bring all 3 parts of
the Music Score to the Bard in Valenadine town, and he'll give
you the Cure Drop. If you come back later, he'll have mastered
the art of Potion-making and set up business.

In Dwarf Land, the Dwarfs are miserable again. This time, it's
because Proserpina has monopolized the Truck Race tracks for her
solo fun! Talk to the Dwarf King, and then enter the Truck Race
tracks. Guess why no one plays with Proserpina? She throws a
lighting bolt on her opponent when she loses! Teach her how to
be a good girl with the good old method. When she repents
(apparently), the Dwarf King rewards you by enhancing your sword.

Let's return to the main quest: you need to check out Vogrod's
Tower for the leak of evil energy. Go to Leeland, sail to Earth
on Truse Tera (first option with the sailor at the dock), descend
to the gate, walk through, and climb Vogrod's Tower to the top
again. (Witch Rods ease the journey significantly.) At the top,
you meet Leon. He picked up Larva the book back in the Tower in
Black Forest, and got himself possessed by it! He tells you that
the two crowns of Valendia and Volga have to be sealed before
Larva, the god of darkness, can be summoned on earth. He asks
you for your crown, and of course you refuse! He tries to get
the crown by killing you: he summons a ridiculously
over-developed undead assassin, Necro-Samansa. Win the battle,
and she flees.

You return to Valenadine Castle (auto event) and report the
situation to Jestonai. Leon will be going for the crown of
Volga. You decide to travel across the sea to Volga to warn the
king, your grandfather Jadis, of the coming danger.

Go talk to the sailor on the docks at Leeland. (He tells you to
prepare for the journey.) Talk to him again, and select the
first option from the list. You'll try to ride the boat to
Sagon, but the Sirenes make you turn back: the ship (and its
crew) are not good enough. After you alight from the ship,
you'll meet Portgus. He offers to take you to Volga on his
pirate ship. Do prepare, and then go to the docks where Portgus
is waiting for you. The ship will be attacked by Sirenes, and
you'll get to fight one.

You arrive at Sagon. It's getting late, so visit the inn and go
to sleep. As you go outside the next morning, you see several
villagers running from a Chaotic Eye! It's Necro-Samansa again,
going for your crown. Fight the Chaotic Eye. As you dispatch
it, the Paladins from Castle Volga arrive, and Samansa flees.
According to Samansa, Leon has blocked the main road to Castle
Volga with a powerful barrier spell, so you have to take the
detour through the Sword Mine.

Go through the Sword Mine. Near the exit at the other end,
Samansa is waiting for you. Fight her for the last time. As
she dies, she comments on your having accumulated hate and
anger in your heart through your battles.

Continue on to Castle Volga. Organize your items before entering
the throne room, where Gradriel just makes it in time to witness
poor King Jadis being petrified by Evil Leon. Filled with hate
and anger, Gradriel's dark side manifests as Evil Gradriel and
chases Leon away. She then passes out. She wakes up in the
"world of her mind", where Evil Gradriel tries to eliminate her
existence by inciting guilt in her heart, thereby taking her
place! But Elfaran's spirit gives Gradriel just the
encouragement she needs, and Gradriel challenges her dark side.
Defeat Evil Gradriel, and you gain the ability to become her by
pressing the L and R buttons simultaneously during battle when
your POWER is full. Press the C button after your rather, er,
stereotypical female anime transformation sequence, and you can
cast spells based on the gem that's currently in front of her.
Each spell costs quite some HP, though. Press B to transform back
into Sensibly Clothed Gradriel; she will also transform back
automatically when she gets hit or when her POWER becomes empty.

Since Leon now has the crown of Volga, he will be coming for
yours. You are returning to Castle Valenadine to prepare for the
inevitable battle. Since Portgus is waiting for you in Sagon,
you go there through Volga Town.

In Volga Town lies the key to your last side quest. If you have
bought (eating is not necessary) the specialty foods from every
town in the game (choose the 2nd option at each pub or bakery),
including Goblin Market (Goblin Juice), Pumpkin House, and the
secret shop in the merchants' area in Cadho Badho, you should
talk to the man in the house just right of the exit to the road
to Volga Castle (he's in there with his mother). He asks you to
retrieve a broken sword from the Sword Mine. The broken sword is
being held by a low-level monster at where Samansa was. Return
the sword to him, and he teaches you the way to "the Last Pub"
south of the town. Purchase their specialty food (it's Dragon
Steak!), then talk to the barkeep again, and she'll give you the
Remove Drop.

Now, it's the final stretch! Head back to the dock in Sagon and
sail back to Valendia. Prepare yourself for the final battle,
and return to Valenadine Castle to wait for Leon. Eventually he
comes. He manages to seize your crown (thereby preventing you
from changing into Evil Gradriel) and seals it to open the portal
for Larva. You pull yourself together and fight him, and then
(after organizing your items) step into the portal to put an end
to Larva before it wrecks havoc on earth ...

VI. Extras.

        FALL DOWN FROM THE BOOKWORLD

So you've won. Whoop-te-do. Now, it's time to play as your peeps
Portgus, Proserpina, and Edward in a collection of mini-quests,
now available as "books" from the main screen (where the girl
picks up the book).

VII. Credits.

Words from Alan:

Many thanks to Douglas Erickson (douglas@mailhost.ecn.ou.edu) for
v2.0 of the FAQ. Also thanks to the people who helped him.

v2.0 inevitably suffered from some shortages because the author
had not wasted a few years of his life in learning to decrypt the
Asian language known as Japanese. I feel that Princess Crown
deserves the best FAQ, so I offered to contribute.

The changes from v2.0 are extensive. If anything in v3.0
contradicts v2.0, the change is intentional, and it is highly
likely that v3.0 is correct. I am not indicating in this update
which parts are original by Douglas, which parts are modified,
and which parts have been rewritten; if you want to find out,
please get v2.0 from Douglas.

Many thanks again to Douglas.

This file (Part 2) contains section VIII only. Parts I through
VII can be found in another file.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

- Introduction -

Proserpina's scenario can be accessed once you've cleared
Gradriel's and Edward's scenarios. Just bring the pink book to
the girl's grandmother.

The way in which the scenario progresses is significantly
different from other scenarios. A large part of this small
scenario revolves around gathering ingredients for a magic
potion. Players who cannot read Japanese are almost bound to get
stuck at one point or another. Thus, a walkthrough is necessary.

The language problem aside, Proserpina's scenario is quite funny
and cute. I hope that you enjoy the game.

- Controls -

The controls for Proserpina are not altogether different from
those for Gradriel. The list of commands is basically the same,
though the effects are rather different.

The D-pad works the same, except that pushing up (in battle)
causes Proserpina to start flying, instead of jumping. Flying
costs power. When outside battle, Proserpina flies instead of
dashes; she won't pick up gold on the ground when flying, so
she'll have to walk for that. It seems that Proserpina can't
jump; if you figure out how to make her jump or do the jumping
spinning rod attack (which she does when you fight her in
Gradriel's scenario), please tell me by e-mail.

Her attacks are significantly different from Gradriel's:

- Pressing the C button once: A double spinning rod attack.
- Pressing C button when flying: A magical rain attack.
- Pressing the C button while crouching: A dash attack, flying on
  her broom.
- Pressing the C button repeatedly will let you attack by
continuously spinning the rod. Unlike Gradriel's, successive
attacks are no less powerful than the initial blow.
- Pressing and holding C will cast a special spell. If it hits,
the enemy will take multiple-hit big damage, and also be
affected by random bad status (ice, stone, or gold).
- When knocked down, hold UP + C to execute a reversal rising
  spin.

You should have no problem experimenting with the attacks and
figuring out how to best use them.

- Items -

The items are the same as Gradriel's.

If Proserpina equips the Angel Boots, she will fly faster.

- Walkthrough -

Proserpina's scenario: The Magic Potion

Spoiler warning: This is a walkthrough, and may spoil the game
for some. (But why one would be reading this file, if he does
not want to read the walkthrough, is beyond my understanding.
^_^ )

Proserpina's scenario takes place concurrently with the early
part of Gradriel's scenario.

You start in the witch's house north of Goblin Market. The old
witch is your mentor. The job of a witch is to give people nasty
surprises by harassing them with magical mischief. ^_^ Today is
the big day when you, Proserpina, sets out on your journey to
prove yourself as a great witch by doing the traditional job.
You receive Gabriel the Goblin as your travel companion. You
really would prefer a cool griffon or dragon, but alas a Goblin
is part of the tradition.

Your target is Nutsbill, where you're going to kidnap the kids
and change them into animals. You first go to Goblin Market.
The first Goblin you meet sells extra bags. Buy one immediately
with (all!) the 300 gold that you start with. Further bags cost
500 and 700 gold respectively. (Yes, unlike Gradriel with her
royal wealth, Proserpina won't have too much 'excess' money in
this scenario.) Leave the village through the right exit.

Where are you going to perform your mischief? You can't be
stationing yourself in Nutsbill village, obviously! Gabriel
knows of an abandoned house in the forest near Nutsbill, and he
leads you there. You decide that it's perfect for a hideout.
Now, you're ready to set off to Nutsbill for the kidnapping.

In Nutsbill, after using the town facilities as necessary, talk
to the girl's mother in the bakery. The kids have gone away to
play, but they've come back when you leave the bakery. You lure
them to come to the forest at night, by offering to use your
magic to grow wings on them so that they can fly with the
fairies. They are (rightfully) naive enough to come, and you
capture them. Now you have a couple of laboratory rats on which
to practice your magic. ^_^ (Note that once you leave Nutsbill,
you're not going to return.)

After a while of having fun with the kids, you feel thirsty, and
so does Gabriel. He suggests getting some Goblin Juice. Leave
the house and go and buy a jar of Goblin Juice from the rightmost
house in Goblin Market. (You don't have to drink it. In fact,
don't: you won't like the taste!) When you return to the house
(organize your items before walking in), you have a guest. Guess
who? Right, we know it because we've played that part. Gradriel
wants to stop you, and with a bossy attitude too! You have to
win the tough fight against her, or you'll "Fall Down From the
Bookworld". However, after the fight, Gradriel defeats you with
a final blow (auto event). She forces you to change the kids
back. After that, you run away. Who dares to interfere with a
witch! And she even gave you a sermon! You swear revenge.

You go to your mentor and consult with her. She offers to make
for you a Magic Potion, which will transform you into an adult.
Then, your magic will be more powerful, and you will be able to
transform that bully into a frog! (At this stage, you can only
transform defenseless kids.) Sweet, sweet revenge! BUT, you
have to gather the ingredients needed to make the potion. This
is what you'll need:

8 x Insect Powder (#1)
5 x Herb with rounded leaves (#3)
8 x Goblin Juice
5 x Milk
1 x Power Plant Seed
5 x Mana Essence
3 x (Raw) Dragon Meat
1 x _each_ kind of Magic Gem (6 total)

WHAT? So many? Yes, I'm serious. ^_^

So, you need to gather all of the above and bring them to your
mentor. The items must be new (with full charges) when
applicable. When you have gathered some number of them, drop
them off at your mentor to free up some backpack space. She'll
tell you what remains to be collected and how many, but I guess
it's not very useful if you can't read Japanese, so you may want
to keep a written record.

Following is how to get each ingredient:

Herbs: Get them in Cadho Badho. The leftmost merchant in the
merchants' area sells herb #3 for 6G each. In the wizards' area,
in the house just left of the transporter, the old woman gives
you any number of Insect Powder for free. (She is the
grandmother of the mage in Knelt who will be turning himself into
a frog. Her grandson keeps sending her Insect Powder, which she
has no use of.)

Goblin Juice: Buy them in Goblin Market.

Milk: Get them in Lowgrove. When you talk to the girl inside
the goat hut, she tells you that her little sister has taken the
goats outside to play. The old lady near the bakery tells you
that some grass which the goats like to eat are growing beyond
the Lost Forest. Enter the Lost Forest through an entrance at
the right end of the village. (It's further to the right than
the entrance to the farm pasture.) A Myconid has been creating
illusions to make people lose their way. Defeat it so that the
little girl can bring the goats home, and then you can get any
number of freshly squeezed goat milk for free in the goat hut.

Power Plant Seed: You can buy one for 2000 gold from the
rightmost merchant in the merchants' area in Cadho Badho. No,
don't pay that outrageous price. ^_^ Halloween the ghost used to
sell them in Pumpkin House, but when you go to Pumpkin House, the
rightmost ghost inside tells you that he may have been captured
by the King of the Dead further ahead in the graveyard. Move on
to the south-east. You see the fat King going to eat Halloween!
In return for not eating Halloween, the King demands that you
bring him some food. He wants a 5-course meal of Fried Egg on
Toast, Grilled Corn, Grilled Fish, Gourmet Meat, plus an Elixir
Fruit for dessert! (No wonder the Poltergeist is so fat!) Bring
him one of each of the above (must be new), and he'll release
Halloween, who will gratefully give you a Power Plant Seed. (If
you appear to have lost it, he'll give you a replacement.)

Mana Essence: Common. Loot or buy.

Dragon Meat: Get them in Dorangora. (Where else?) Talk to the
same young man in green to learn about the path to the mountains
where the dragons are. In the mountains, you see an exhausted
mercenary fighting a heavily wounded Dragon. You take it to be
an excellent opportunity, and you offer to help the mercenary.
Finish off the Dragon, then talk to the mercenary twice (with
empty USE bag space) to demand /two/ pieces of Dragon Meat from
him. (He initially wants to deny, but you emphasise that it's
the request of a cute little girl ... ^_^ ) Wait, don't we need
three? That's right. Get the third either during the last
battle, or from random Dragons you fight on the obvious road.

Magic Gems: You start the scenario with a Thor Gem, but the rest
you must loot from enemies. Pay attention to the Treasure Menu
after you defeat a foe. Use your Goblin Rod to knock the enemy
down; if needed, you can buy a new magic dagger for 16 gold from
the merchant walking around just left of the shop in the
merchant's area in Cadho Badho. (I'm not sure if any enemy other
than the Dragon drops Sapphires.)

At long last, you have collected all the required ingredients.
Your mentor makes the potion for you, and you drink it, and
"poof!" you're now adult Proserpina. You verify your adult
status. ^_^ You thank your mentor and set off to find Gradriel.
You find her. You demonstrate your adult status. ^_^ You prepare
to cast the spell to change Gradriel to a frog ...

- Strategy -

Spoiler warning: significant spoilers in this section. If you
want to develop the play strategy by yourself, please do not read
on.

This section is mainly concerned with how to progress in the
scenario efficiently, without fighting lots of 'extra' battles
for money (or experience). Note that this is only one of the
possible styles of play; some players may prefer to play the game
at a slower pace.

In short, Proserpina fights a lot weaker than the other player
characters. Her attack strength is lower, her rod has shorter
reach, her special is slower and more open to interruption, and
she cannot jump. She can fly and attack some enemies safely from
above, but her magic rain attack doesn't do much damage either.
I find her best bet to be her spinning rod attacks.

On top of that is the need to save money for backpacks, and to
submit magic gems to your mentor. Since you don't want to spend
a lot of money on Mana Essence or burn lots of magic gems in
battle, you'll be fighting with much less gem magic than you did
as the other characters. Fortunately, as a sub-character,
Proserpina begins the scenario with the Trust Drop, so you can
use potions a lot to support her otherwise weak fighting ability.
Also, unlike in the scenarios for other characters, there are not
many bosses for Proserpina to fight.

The first part of the scenario involves some routine traveling,
and cumulates in the fight with Gradriel. Gradriel is really
tough, clearly the hardest fight in Proserpina's scenario.
Adding to the difficulty is that it's early in the game, and you
don't have many good items to use against her. Put your best
items against her, and don't worry about using up items
(including magic gems) because you'll find them again later.
Just concentrate on winning the battle. (It is recommended that
you don't bring your Goblin Rod into the battle: it doesn't do
much. On the other hand, the Potion of Negate Pain which you
start with is good; try to save it for this battle.) It is best
if you have some grilled food for this fight. Also, beware of
equipping newly picked up equipment during a major battle!

After defeating Gradriel, you move on to the item collection part
of the scenario. You want at least a second extra bag, so that
you can bring back more ingredients in one trip. Until you amass
the 500 gold needed to buy a second extra bag, it is recommended
that you don't go farther than Dorangora and Cadho Badho: there
are shops in these towns, so you can sell loot for money. Until
you have more bags, venturing far to Cemeteryth and Lowgrove
isn't too fruitful. By the time you get the Dragon Meat and one
load of herbs to your mentor, you should have the 500 gold needed
for a second bag, provided you avoid unnecessary spendings.

There are no shops which sell E+1 scrolls except for the one in
Nutsbill, which quickly becomes inaccessible. Thus, you won't be
relying on one piece of high endurance equipment as you do in
other scenarios; fortunately, there are not any real boss battles
after Gradriel. Use your judgement and decide wisely what to use
and what to sell. (If you have not read Part 1 of the FAQ v3.0,
it is recommended that you do so, since the section on items has
been extensively updated.) You also want to cook your own food,
so that you don't have to spend money on food or lodging. (Spice
can be bought cheaply in Dorangora when needed, but keep a pan.)
Elixir Fruits are also handy. Use your magic special against the
less threatening enemies: if you're lucky, you can get quite some
gold with it. Don't buy Goblin Juice yet; that can wait.
Ideally, you'll get the money you need just going on the
necessary trips, without fighting 'extra' battles for money.

Once you have got your second extra bag, it's time to visit the
more remote places. To save some walking, collect the necessary
foods before you go to Pumpkin House. (Note that the pubs in
this scenario do not sell Grilled Corn or Grilled Fish.) A third
extra bag is to some degree a luxury, so it's ok now to spend
money on other things, such as Witch Rods. There are some
high-level enemies in the Lost Forest, so prepare some good
items. Gather all the items you need, and enjoy watching the
ending!
