[ For more information consult an encyclopedia. And for you lucky PC Owners look into, INDYCAR RACING - INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY EXPANSION PACK, or INDYCAR II. by PAPYRUS SOFTWARE Gratuitous plug - this is probably THE BEST driving simulator on the planet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ] II) Various questions (a) Q: What is it ? A: Indy 500 (see note below) is the 4th or (whatever you want) in a series of high performance racing/driving sims that incorporates mind numbing texture mapping and polygon technology. (This is through the version 2 motherboard that was used in Daytona, however this is a beefed up version). this is a VERY VERY SIMPLIFIED version of indycar racing, with emphasis on the Indy 500 raceway. so expect blazingly fast races, and intense competition. Note : Other Sega Arcade Racing High Tech Simulators 1) Virtua Racing (F1 Type/Indycar) 2) Daytona (Nascar Racing) 3) Sega Rally Championship VS 1995 (Off road Rally) ->4) Indy 500 : Indianapolis Motor Speedway 5) Manx T.T (Motor Bike Racing) *6) Daytona 2 (Improved Nascar racing) [Projected 3rd q/96] [ Numbers 1,2,and 3 are available for Sega Saturn System ] [ Number 1 also available for Sega Genesis / Sega 32x also ] [ Number 5 is coming out 2nd half/96 for Sega Saturn ] [ Number 4 related game F-1 Live is coming out mid-96] [ Number 4 is projected for sometime next year ] [ Number 6 is being called Daytona Championship Circuit edition and is being modifed for the Sega Saturn Late /96] (b) q: how is it? a: there are many different issues which will be addressed shortly. -overall the impression is excellent, it is a quantum leap from virtua racing ! -if you have never seen the prior games, be prepared for some major eye-candy, this game is one of the most realistic visual driving games yet.. (c) q: music? a: not really sure, i can't hear it because it's turned down way too much on the machine i've tried -if the volume is too loud ask the operator to turn it DOWN, since you will eventually get a headache if you play it too long, if you can't hear it, ask them to turn it up, so at least you can hear the excellent engine sounds (d) q: ranking out 10 point scale? ( compared to other sega games) a: speed/graphics : 9.5 (nothing is 10 yet) gameplay : 9.5 (9 is daytona,7 is virtua racing) difficulty : 9.5 (9 is daytona, 8 is virtua racing) handling : 9.5 (9 is virtua racing, 7 is daytona) overall : 9.5 / 10 -my impressions of course! -i don't know where ridge racer, and ace driver would go on the scale because those are from namco(c). (e) q: speed of graphics? a: yes, the graphics refresh rate, and frame rate is higher than daytona, (possibly 60fps?) and even ridge racer and ace driver. there are NO popup problems that i could detect, Supposedly Sega might be working on the saturn conversion! , but due to the complexity of the game, it may not be possible to get an exact translation. arghhhhhhh [see rumors for latest info] -your field of view in the car, is about the same as daytona , and the above/behind view also has a similar field of view. -plenty of anti-aliasing on the road textures, and plenty of different ones, in fact, from the in-car view the lower 1/8 of the screen is also blurred and anti-aliased to create a new texture. -the road has various random patches like real ones, and not the generic randomized nascar roads. -plenty of polygon signs ,buildings, and other objects too numerous to mention. -there are so many signs and advertisements, you will not be able to take them in while you're playing, so forgot about even trying, and watch when someone else plays! (ee) bugs bugs bugs - none discovered yet! very good!!!! (f) q: speed and types of cars? a: remember these are indy cars, there are 2 kinds , 1 manual , and 1 automatic. The basic body is not recongizable to me yet, still need to look into it. Of course it's a F-1 type, but i'm still researching it. [ Note : Due to a trick it is possible to drive the PACE CAR, though it is not recommended due to loss in performance in its handling! ] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) manual vs automatic automatic - easy to drive, no shifting, slower acceleration coming out of turns, average handling if you know how to brake in conjuntion with accelerating ,don't know about top speed manual - harder to drive, shifting, faster acceleration coming out of turns, better handling, should have a slightly higher top speed (at least in manual mode) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) F-1 vs Pace Car -F-1 handles better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (g) q: settings? a: the default arcade settings are japanese for country/text : set to export/US car difficulty-normal time difficulty - normal credits - 1per coin currently you can expect to pay $0.50 - $1 for each game or 2-4 coins depending on where you are. course settings - (unconfirmed) ------------------------------- TBD (h) q: head to head? a: yes or solo, they had a linked version at the arcade in University of Houston, so i figure just like the other head to head games, you can link up to eight with a main master cabinet and several slave ones. (i) q: number of courses? a: 3 , INDY 500 (easy!), Highland (medium!), and Bayside (expert!). much more on each one later. Of course, only the first course is based on a real one, the others are totally fictious! NOTE : Through a trick , it is possible to play in mirror mode, where all the turns are reversed Left->Right etc. (j) q: modes of play? a: championship only is the one where you race against , i think , 20-30 other cars to finish various numbers of laps of each course. k) q: could you be more specific on the laps? a: race laps diff start mode ---------- --- ----- --------------- Indy 500 4 (easy) rolling start Highland 3 (medium) rolling start Bayside 3 (expert) rolling start ------------------------------------ (l) q: controls? a:-standard steering wheel with feedback -6 gear shift (up and down controls) -standard metal gas and brake, adjustable sit down seats (no cushions!) -one release latch to the lower right on the front of the seat, -one start button (on left hand side) and TWO view button to its right (one red, the other blue), one zooms in, and the other zooms out. -fake control panel with 3 gauges(water, temp, and rpm) AM4!!!! and various fake switches -no clutch!!!!! (m) q: operation? a: put the money in, the computer waits to see if another player wants to get in, (you wait 20 seconds). [to speed up time, press the view buttons rapidily many times !!! ] if no one enters you have the choice of courses. then you pick one of the two cars (1 manual, 1 auto) [not including pace car] with the steering wheel, pick by either pressing start or pressing the gas pedal. the game starts and you are presented with an out of car view. each race starts from a rolling start. -the whole idea is to race a set number of laps for each course, and finish them in the allocated time, you have a certain amount of time at the beginning, and in each course there are certain checkpoints that add to the amount of time you can get, usually if you crash once, you might finish the course, but only if its a minor one, and you drive a near perfect set of laps after that. -if you are playing head to head, you can try to beat the other person, and the clock also, if you are behind, and the other person is finishing the course you still get to continue as long as they are making it to the checkpoints... -i think the first person decides the course, and if you pick different ones, the lower one wins out (beginner over moderate) -there is no time lap mode i think, or i don't know how to activate it yet?????? (n) q: do you have to wait to jump in? a: no , you can start even if the other player hasn't finished yet. (o) q: onscreen details? a: here are the various indicators. [ Visible at all times ] < CONFIRM ? > speed and rpm -------------------------------------------------------------------- there is a digital speedometer with large numbers and rpm meter (digital tachometer) with gear number on the lower right of the screen (the instrumentation is translucent so you can see the road through it) maps ----------------------------------------------------------------------- there is a map on the mid-right hand side, with position indicators. your position in the race is on the top right hand side. the arrows on the map, correspond to your car , and the other dots show the positions of all the other cars ----------------------------------------------------------------------- time indicators ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - fastest lap indicator for all persons , upper left - individual lap times , upper left - fastest section of track times, upper right - section of track times, upper right - Cumalative real time (adjusted for rolling start)? cumalative lap time? position ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - your position in the race is shown in the upper uppper left? - Use the trick to show the cars position over them (see tricks) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (p) q: cars again? a: < Confirm ? > (from the exterior view) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ F-1 Pace Car ------------------------ 4 door colors) tires) goodyear ? decals) description - location ------------------------------------------------------------- Pace Car ------------------------------------------------------- body) four door , possibly 2? sirens flashing on top colors) tires) decals) description - location ------------------------------------------------------------------------ just as another note, here is what is on the backs of the right hand seat. --------------------------------------------------------- [Number, 1 or 2] (Indy 500) NOTE :the same information is one the seat to the left ----------------------------------------------------------------------- handling ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - if there's a driving heaven, this is it! The car sticks to the road like you wouldn't believe, better than virtua racing even!!!!! car number ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -if you are player one, your car has a one on it, if you are player two it has two on it, i assume that when there are more players, they have their number on it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -whatever all of this is mostly subjective anyway, how are you supposed to quantitatively describe these attributes without comparisons anyway???? (q) q: be specific about the views. a: There are 6 views (2 hidden) [ see tricks ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) the on the hood, looking at the road flying by view, which supposedly a lot of experts use (i don't see how?) 2) the in car on the hood/in car hybrid view, this is similar to the hood view (view 1) of daytona - if you like realism, pick 2, (left view button), or speed (left view button twice) pick 1 - it seems like the turns are slightly easier to take in view 1,2 but i'm not sure, maybe you don't have to turn as much? 3) slightly above the back of the car view 4) the above and behind view (my favorite) view 4 in daytona. -these view gives you the advantage you can see your car and its relation to the road -you can judge the upcoming turns and see which direction your wheels are facing (important turn information) -you can also the distance and relation of other cars in reference to your position -you also get to see more scenery! 5) aerial view, much higher above the whole track, and behind the car - must use a trick to get this (hold both view buttons while playing or while car is starting) - very useful on first and second courses, hard with the third one - if you get used to this view be careful, because all the turns will seem different, and you will overreact, when you switch to normal views 6) reverse view, used for showing off, shows car from the front !!!!! - must use a trick to get this, hold a view button and the start button at the same time - you've got to be kidding!!!! use at the last second when you cross the finish line (r) q: what about control? a: this is probably the one biggest question that will affect whether you want to play it or not.. -basically the F-1 handling is much better than the Pace Car steering is sensitive, but feel free to yank the wheel quickly for a hard turn -a tight grip is needed to turn, somewhat like daytona, but a bit more responsive, the gas and braking handle like daytona, with large amounts of braking and hard pressure on the gas pedal giving the equivalent amounts of braking, or speed. -it will take you a couple of games to get used to this! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- overall - i would rate the car handling as the best above virtua racing which was rock solid absolute control and daytona - slide city - since you have no need to powerslide (explained later) don't worry above timing the brakes and turning , but you will need other important techniques ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - sorry i can't compare it to other games like outrunners or any thing else, i just don't play those other games that much.. (s) q: how hard is the game? a: well this is a tough question? here goes. degree of difficulty -------------------- [ hmmm, i'm not sure if it's me, or the machine, but where i play it is VERY VERY HARD TO FINISH 1st on the course, without driving semi-perfectly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ] for the seasoned virtua racing expert - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ unbelievably hard but not impossible to finish all 3 course after a week (i am not kidding) for the seasoned daytona expert - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ unbelievably hard but not impossible to finish all 3 course after a week (i am not kidding) for the new racing car person - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IMPOSSIBLE, except for maybe finishing the INDY 500 course (they are going to have to spend loads of dough to even finish the beginning course) for the moderate racing car persion - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- VERY VERY HARD to IMPOSSIBLE ( they wont have to spend as much >us$20 ) to get past beginner and maybe moderate ALL OF THIS IS ASSUMING THE GAME IS ON NORMAL/NORMAL DEFAULT SETTINGS. - Learn to use the automatic, but forget about finishing anyway near first! ITS MANUAL ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - This game will challenge you, and drive you crazy (ha-ha), if you want to finish 1st on all the courses. - dissapointed? well , don't be too much, because sega shortened the game (notice the number of laps for each course is pretty small) , maybe if you are lucky you will find an arcade that sets it to a very high amount of laps!! (t) q: why is the game so hard? a: there are a couple of factors ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) the cars are hard to handle 2) the enemy cars show intelligence and drive superbly 3) you have little room for error 4) you MUST LEARN TO DRIVE THE MANUAL CAR 5) ok, at least they give you turn indicators on whats coming up! u) q) any car damage? a) hmmm. if you have played this game for awhile, you may noticed a couple of things, your car does flip over,as do the others if you hit a lot of walls, your traction declines you will see all kinds of damage on the car if you crash, but since the game is so short, YOU NEVER NEED TO GO INTO THE PIT STOP why is it there then? maybe there are settings that are a lot longer, where it will be critical? III) Course guide a) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE : The manual and automatic information below contain slightly different descriptions for the turns, the automatic is geared more towards the beginning driver while the manual is for the expert driver (however, ALL the courses can be mastered by both types, i'm just not as good with automatic) NOTE : the recovery techniques are mine, and the penalty times are just estimates, if you can crash and still finish the course, you don't need to know these, these are just basic techniques that you can use anywhere. MY TURN TERMINOLOGY : STOLEN STRAIGHT OUT OF MY Sega Rally FAQ !!!! vocabulary and turn description ------------------------------------------ a) right or left b) easy , medium and hard c) very, long or ( none ) ------------------------------------------ examples.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) easy left - obvious, just barely turn the wheel at full speed you should be able to make the turn without losing any speed 2) easy right - same as above 3) long easy left - another easy turn, but the turn radius is much longer than the short one, so don't abruptly turn the wheel 4) long easy right - same as above 5) very long easy left - this turn is one of the longest in the game, you should not have to slow down entirely if you complete it just right 6) very long easy right - same as above 7) medium left - you will have to brake slightly, or downshift to take this turn , if you don't you will either hit the sides, or go off the road 8) medium right - same as above 9) hard left - you will probably have to power slide into this turn, don't know what a power slide is? read the daytona faq please 10) hard right - same as above -at some point these will abbreviated like EL,LEL,LMRM, HR for easy left, long easy left, long medium right maybe, and hard right. and placed into the course descriptions... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE : Needs to be confirmed b) IMPORTANT DRIVING AND HANDLING INFORMATION ------------------------------------------ here are few of my suggestions and tips for learning to handle the car better, and driving the car RANKED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1) learn to use the MANUAL OR FORGET ABOUT COMING IN 1st !!!!!! 2) practice practice practice, you must drive the courses many times to learn where you can push the speed higher and higher (i'm not getting paid by SEGA!!! really !!) learn how to take a turn but turning outward before turn, braking or downshifting, and turning into turn and speeding up out of turn it is important to find apex of turn and be able to execute it every time, even when there are other cars there !!!!!!!!!!!!! 3) the tires SHOULD NEVER EVER BE SQEALING, or HAVE SMOKE COMING from them, any time the tires are not in FULL CONTACT with the road, you are NOT AT FULL SPEED, understand? make sure the car tires are parallel to the road at almost all times [NO POWERSLIDES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT DAYTONA OR SEGA RALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!] 4) learn to yank the wheel to take hard turns, and don't use the brakes at all for some turns (see notes below) 5) learn to tap the brakes for hard turns, and not to constantly press down on them, when in doubt DOWNSHIFT (if you use MANUAL) otherwise you will have to be excellent with the brakes 6) NEVER TOUCH THE GRASS, WALLS, DIRT , CARS, or ANYTHING THAT IS not considered road (duh.....) NOTE :EXCEPT WHEN ----------------- exception to this, is on Bayside course, during one S-turn there is a bit of grass you can run over to cut a corner short!!! 7) learn best way to shift at appropriate speeds! Such as : Speed Gear ------------- 0-50? 1st 51-100 2nd? 101-120 3rd? 121-160 4th? 161-180 5th? 181 6th? 8) observe car patterns, there are definite breaks that you can/should get into so that you can overtake them at appropriate times (described in course analysis perhaps?) Pre - Race Warmup Routine ------------------------- DO THIS FOR EVERY RACE / AGAINST COMPUTER OR ANOTHER PERSON 0) Adjust seat, put in money, and speed up selection if you want (see tricks) 1) Know which course you want to race If you want a mirrored race, be prepared to press buttons (see tricks) 2) Pick Car (F-1 or Pace) If you want to drive pace car (which is huge difference!) , or drive against pace cars (which doesn't make a difference!) (see tricks) 3) ALWAYS TURN ON EXTRA POSITION INDICATORS OVER CARS this way you get to see what position you're in, without having to look all the place and crash !!!! (see tricks) 4) Pick view that you want to drive with, while the car is doing the rolling start if you want the extra high view , be prepared to press buttons (see tricks) 5) Slam down on acclerator once the race starts !! c) INDY 500 Track i) -------------------------------------------------------------- | NOTE ALL MAPS ARE NOT TO SCALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | -------------------------------------------------------------- map --- <- North Turn 3 Turn 2 /--------------------------------------------- \ / \ | | | | | | | | | Pit area | \ /--------------------\ / \ ---------------------------|--------------- / Turn 4 ^ Turn 1 | Start Grand Stands ii) Description : This course is an accurate representation of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Of course there are a few details changed for convenience, but nothing that major that will affect anything. Of course the fact that you don't get 200 laps for $.50 is kinda bad for business, so you get 4 laps, from a rolling start. Also note that it is basically 4 left turns (or right in mirrored mode), but at Turn 1, and Turn 3 you have a lot more time to react to turning. This is the easiest course, and once you master turning its all over. BUT , the trick is that there are PLENTY OF OTHER CARS to mess you up. And if you want to get really good, you will have to draft like crazy. Note : Drafting is a phenomenon which occurs when you are behind other cars and use the fact that they are getting the turbulence from the air in front , and your car is not! This will give your car and added speed boost. IMPORTANT OBSERVATION ---------------------------------------------------------- As a final note, since there is no way in the world you can finish this course 1st, because you start in last place at the beginning, what Sega has done is that on the 2nd lap, about halfway through, a GIGANTIC crash will take place, and if you're careful, you can gain the 10 or 15 places ahead to get you in position to finish.
