To skip cutscenes press A to bring up the dialog, then X. ============================================================================ General Gameplay Tips [GMPL] ============================================================================ GENERAL STRATEGIES ------------------ Charging in guns blazing willl get you killed quickly. The best strategy is to move forward until an enemy spawns, rush backwards then slowly move forward and pick them off. This is particularly effective against groups and when climbing. When you're being shot at the bullets will often be shot in clusters, so don't move about too much while they're being shot and they'll all head in one direction, making them much easier to avoid. Learn how high Captain Smiley jumps (fairly high) and what he can slide under (most attacks). Use both a lot. On some of the pole climbing sections there are portions of land you can fall down onto, such as at the end of one of the pole sections in stage 1. If the surface looks to low to climb back up to though, it probably is. HELP MES -------- Earn 'Help Me's by completing the melee stages without taking damage or buying them at the Upgrades screen. Check out STGB for a list of stages with melee portions. To be able to afford multiple 'Help Me's buy all the extras early into the game (see UNLK) to increase your per-stage income. They do about 22000 damage and are the only way to REFILL YOUR HEALTH. Using a 'Help Me' means you don't get your $1,000 bonus at the end of a stage. You get the same $1,000 bonus no matter how many 'Help Me's you have, so once you've used one you can let rip with the other two if you have them. This makes it economic to use a 'Help Me' to get a Readership Bonus, which is $3000, as you only lose $1000, giving you an extra $1000 in total. However, it may be cheaper to die than use a Help Me to refill your health since 'Help Me's are expensive to reacquire, and deaths only costs $500, $800, $900 or $1000 depending on if you die 1, 2, 3, or 4+ times. This only really applies early in the game though, as buying Bonuses increases your Score Bonus, which multiplies your money up to 325%, so a single death could soon get expensive. DIFFICULTY ---------- You can turn on Aim Assist in the Options menu if you're struggling. This game is crazy hard sometimes, so don't beat yourself up if you don't do too well, especially early on, and especially before you have any upgrades. The game's designed so that the earlier levels don't suddenly become a cakewalk after upgrading, although they do get a lot easier. Likewise, with the "Don't get hit" sections, where you earn a bonus $3,000 for avoiding damage, some are incredibly difficult and the 'Help Me's are there to be used. Check out STGB for help on beating the reader bonus sections. ============================================================================ Upgrades [UPGD] ============================================================================ The more Bonuses you buy the more your score multiplier increases, and the more you earn in the long-term. So buy Bonuses early! High priced items give a bigger percentage increase (but only relative to the cost of the bonus). Upgrades DO carry over to Challenges. Breakout [] 2500 Health [][][] 1000 5000 20000 Melee [] 5000 Damage [][][][][] 1000 7500 12000 25000 50000 Slider [][] 2000 ? Help Me ()()() 5000 ? ? Break Out --------- Useful as being grabbed doesn't cause damage but leaves you vulnerable to other attacks. Not the best one to go for early on, get this when other upgrades become too expensive. Health ------ Very useful, giving you around and extra 1 or 2 hits per increase. It's cheap too, so well worth getting. Melee ----- The melee parts are pretty easy, so only buy this if you struggle or want to complete them faster. Remember you earn Help Mes by successfully completing melee sections without taking damage, so if you're struggling it's well worth buying this upgrade. Damage ------ One reviewer wrote that a fully upgraded Damage cuts the time it takes to kill an enemy from 5 to 2 seconds, which is a massive decrease. This upgrade is absolutely necessary further into the game, as enemies get harder to kill and boss health gets ridiculous. Slider ------ Sliding is invaluable if you use it well. In most instances you can jump to avoid attacks, but sliding allows you to pass through enemies, excluding robots and enemies that grab you. A fully upgraded Slider lets you slide across the whole screen, which is very useful to avoiding certain boss attacks, but doesn't serve much use otherwise. Get it later in the game, when you're loaded and face bosses like HeHe and Skelesaurus, whos attacks you need to slide under. Help Me ------- Check out the guide to 'Help Me's in General Gameplay Tips (GMPL). ============================================================================ Stage Bonuses [STGB] ============================================================================ Every stage carries the same bonuses, listed below. Every stage also has two portions where, if you don't get hit or perform a particular task you earn $3,000. These are listed below, in STGD. You can also increase your overall income/score per stage by purchasing Bonuses. Finally, certain stages have melee sections where you can earn 'Help Me's (check out GMPL for more details on this) while others have quicktime events you need to successfully pass to unlock an achievement. STAGE SCORE BONUSES ------------------- Every stat is displayed for completion purposes. 'Save it' means you didn't use a help me. For each stat you get a green, orange, yellow or red score and a cash amount ($), although green is used twice for two different score amounts. This doesn't count for some stats. Base pay is set and differs between missions (these can be viewed in the STGD section). Score Bonus depends on the bonuses you've unlocked. Readership Bonuses depend on you fulfilling a specific criteria in a section. These are listed in the Stage Guide section (STGD). In these cases, 'Green1' represents a pass. Your Time Bonus depends on how far below Par Time you were (also listed in Stage Guide). I dont't know the exact formula but 1:10:11 below Par Time gives you $1353. Sliding down is faster than climbing up when avoiding deadly fans. 3-1B: To get Pling Pling into heaven you need to dance by pressing LT, RT, X, A or B a bunch of times. Don't stop or the scene willl end before Pling Pling rises to heaven. The "I Love You" song willl play twice before the stage ends, so you've got around 1:25 to get that unicorn to heaven! ============================================================================ Challenges Guide [CHGD] ============================================================================ Complete challenges to earn the base pay respective to each one. Complete them faster and with lots of kills to earn more cash. Take any damage (or often, just touch enemies) to end the challenge. If you don't complete a challenge, you'll still earn cash for your kills. Your end of mission score bonus multiplier is still affected by bonuses, so keep buying those extras! Challenge 01 ------------ Comic: Adventures of Captain Smiley Par time: 1:00 Base pay: $500 Description: Race across a construction zone Challenge 02 ------------ Comic: Adventures of Captain Smiley #23 Par time: 1:30 Base pay: $750 Description: Escape the panel and kill the Bradbots Tip: Take out the flying Bradbots first, as you can just slide under the shots from the grounded ones. Also, shoot those metallic grabby Bradbots as soon as you see them, you won't be able to slide past them. Challenge 03 ------------ Comic: Nano the Obliverator #285 Par time: 1:30 Base pay: $750 Description: Fight through treetops Challenge 04 ------------ Comic: Nano the Obliverator #286 Par time: 1:20 Base pay: $750 Description: Climb a cliff by scaling platforms and a wall, then defeat a Tigersaurus Challenge 05 ------------ Comic: Improbable Paper Pals #77 Par time: 3:30 Base pay: $2000 Description: Fight through space Challenge 06 ------------ Comic: Improbable Paper Pals #78 Par time: 1:40 Base pay: $1000 Description: Climb a bunch of ropes Tips: Take out the enemies that shoot at you first (e.g. rather than the fire breathing dummies). This challenge is easy if you just keep moving. Challenge 07 ------------ Comic: Cutie Cutie Kid Cupids Volume 10 Par time: 3:05 Base pay: $2500 Description: Fight through the school Tips: The demons willl always throw skulls in the same order. Memorise this pattern and shoot the demons as they throw their skulls. When the school girls appear shoot them first, as they're much harder to dodge than skulls. The girls are a real pain, but they can be jumped over. Challenge 08 ------------ Comic: Cutie Cutie Kid Cupids Volume 11 Par time: 2:15 Base pay: $2500 Description: Fight on Pling Pling through a forest ============================================================================ Boss Fights [BSFT] ============================================================================ BRAD ---- The easiest way to avoid missiles is to stand under Brad and shoot upwards, allowing you to quickly slide/jump away if things get too hot. Hide behind the electric boxes to avoid his missiles. When he flies across the screen you can jump onto a dangling rope coming from his Bradcopter to cling on and do more damage. His Bradbots willl arrive, so take them out swiftly before they can hit you, or just take the hits if you can manage it. In the second Brad fight he drops bombs, so don't try to climb on! During the second fight do the same again, but take out the shooting Bradbots asap. They're a nuisance and make it hard to evade Brads missiles properly. NANOC ----- Listed here for the sake of completion, just walk up to Nanoc and hit him. He won't hurt you. PUTTMASTER ---------- The Puttmaster's easy to beat, just keep hitting him then back off when he starts to charge his golf club. Use A to deal a shorter attack that's easier to back away from. When Captain Smiley and the Puttmaster clash just mash X or A. RUFUS (PUTTMASTER's CADDY) -------------------------- Horizontal attack: Starts with Rufus flying horizontally offscreen. Slide to avoid this. Single missile: Starts with Rufus jumping back into frame, so be ready to evade him with a quick slide. He'll launch a single missile that causes a spread of fire on ground impact. Jump to avoid this. Meanwhile, Rufus willl stand still, allowing you one of the few chances you'll get to hit him. Bombing run: Starts with Rufus flying off screen. He'll emerge at the top of the screen from either side and drop a load of exploding golf balls. You need to be very quick and slide to the gap between the balls. This is perhaps the hardest attack to avoid because it happens so fast. Multiple missiles: Starts with Rufus standing up straight at one side of the screen. He'll launch a series of missiles, you either need to slide underneath them or jump over them depending on the pattern he fires. If he pauses during shooting them you'll need to jump between the gap, if not then get ready slide. He'll be stunned after this. SKELESAUR --------- The easiest way to beat Skelesaur seems to be by staying near the top of the screen, using the banner to cross sides when necessary.. Corner lunge: Starts with Skelesaur moving back and facing a corner. Just move to the other side of the room. Tail swipe: Starts with FOS turning around. Skelesaur willl sweep the floor, causing spikes to emerge from the ground. Climb the stairs Side bash: Starts with Skelesaur moving backwards, facing a wall. He'll lunge forward, you can either climb over him using the banner or slide underneath him. Head lunge: Eventually Skelesaur willl detach his head and it'll launch at whichever wall you're nearest to. Get up high to avoid this. Pac-Man Attack!: Skelesaur's head willl circle the screen. Just avoid him. Chasing: Skelesaur's head willl start lunging and chasing. Don't panic, just keep avoiding, jumping and climbing over him. Don't slide, it's useless here. After a while he'll re-attach his head, which means he's about to die. You should probably use a 'Help Me' here if you're gonna get your Readership Bonus. MISTRESS ROPES --------------- She's actually pretty easy, especially during the second fight, as her attacks are more limited and easier to dodge. She'll shoot ropes according to how she's about to attack, so horizontal (left and right) ropes means a horizontal attack. Get used to attacks and she's a piece of cake. BENNY ----- Check out the info on getting the 'He's Not Even Married' achievement for tips on beating Benny quickly. As soon as the third stage starts, press right and get ready to start dodging and jumping. Many people get hit during the page turn from stage 2 to stage 3. When he starts shooting missiles, you can use the blocks you need to jump over as cover and let the missiles blow up on the cover, but it's probably easier to just shoot the damn things. Watch out for where his lasers are pointing before he shoots them, then quickly get to a safe spot. MANGA BOY HEAD THING -------------------- This guy is infinitely easier once you know how to avoid his attacks. You can jump through the laser stream, just don't get hit by the tip of it, where it reaches the dock. You can also run under the bouncing mines. For the booger things, just avoid them and shoot, sticking to the sides. Note that they'll home in on you, so don't let them go off the sides of the screen, 'cause they'll come back but you won't be able to see them. LOLO, COCO & NANA ----------------- These girls are easy to beat, just memorise the patterns so you know where to position yourself when they start using their attacks. HEHE ---- Get used to his attacks and how to avoid them and you should be OK. Heart wave: Starts with a head spin. When you see this start climb onto a wall; this willl allow you to evade faster than if you were on the ground, allowing you to climb to the ceiling or jump down to the floor depending on where the gap is. When CoCo and NaNa start launching spikes and bubbles at you it gets much harder, although I think they just circle the screen, so can be avoided by watching their patterns. This is the hardest attack to avoid because it's so easy to get cornered. Wall hug: Starts with HeHe turning to the right. Just slide underneath HeHe to avoid. Upgrading your slide is very useful for this evasion. Shock wave: Starts with HeHe jumping and floating briefly. Climb the wall to avoid this one. In the second HeHe fight you may need to stay on the ground to avoid CoCo and NaNa's attacks, so get used to timing your jump with HeHes animations. Tears: Starts with arm waggle. Climb to the top corners for easy evasion. During the second fight, stay on the ground and jump over the bubbles or fly ing spike things while dodging the tears. Try to stay as near to the centre as possible, as the tears generally fall to the left and right. ???? ---- I don't wanna spoil the surprise. This boss only has two attacks, either a swipe from his top two hands that you can slide under, or a shockwave ground pound that you can jump over. You'll quickly learn the animations for both. To make it easier shoot either his top hands or lower hands, depending on which attack you find it easier to evade. I prefer to shoot his top hands first, as it's easier to evade the flies that arrive later by jumping. ============================================================================ Unlockables & Bonuses [UNLK] ============================================================================ The more Bonuses you buy the more your score multiplier increases, and the more you earn in the long-term. So buy Bonuses early! High priced items give a bigger percentage increase (but only relative to the cost of the bonus). I recommend turning down the voice and sound, as you're gonna spend a lot of time unlocking stuff and both get annoying very fast. Some music can't be unlocked (such as the Captain Smiley theme song). Check out the XTRA section for a download link from Twisted Pixel for these. To play the 'Splosion Man bonus levels you must have 'Splosion Man already installed. The extra adds 1 single player level and 1 multiplayer level. I've not tried it but the description says, go to stage 4-1 to play the extra level. To unlock them buy Exclusive #4 for $5,000. COLLECTION OF A TRUE FAN ------------------------ Buy every Bonus. Buy bonuses early to maximise your future income. To buy stuff quickly keep tapping A, A, (pause), A, right. That'll get you through the 160 purchases of Concept Art a little faster. EUGENE'S PROTEGE ---------------- Complete every quicktime event mistake-free. This is easy, just remember the buttons even appear at on-screen locations relative to the button positions on the controller, so 'A' willl appear at the top of the screen, 'X' on the left, etc. Stages 1, 10 and ? have these sequences. The stages also always have the same patterns. Check out STGB for these patterns. HE'S NOT EVEN MARRIED --------------------- Take out Benny (drill boss) without being hit. This one is infamously difficult, but there's a reason these are called achievements. Originally this was bugged and you couldn't do it, now you can, but you need to start the fight with full health. So, if you're at less than 100% health when you start the fight, kill yourself and you'll restart to just before the fight. The easiest way to do this is to come to the fight with 3 Help Me's. Use one during the falling scene and two during the second side-scrolling scene. Knock him down to under 450,000 health before activating your first Help Me to avoid having to evade him more than necessary later, in the third, harder stage of the fight. Be sure to try this after fully upgrading your damage stats. This is probably gonna be the last achievement you unlock. Check out the Boss Fights tips section for more help in fighting Benny. Note that you can't activate Help Me's (by pressing Y) in rapid succession, so you'll have to evade Benny for a few seconds before using your 3rd one. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py0jpNxPXOI HERO OF THE SILVER AGE ---------------------- Complete the second genre. I TOOK PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS ---------------------------- Get every upgrade. Be sure to buy all the Bonus items early, as each one you buy gives you a percentage increase on your income per level, to a maximum of about 325%. JOB WELL DONE, FAITHFUL READER ------------------------------ Complete the game. Finish the first stage, all three genres and the final stage. NEURAL NET PROCESSORS --------------------- Destroy 25 Bradbots. Super easy to do, you'll get this during the first stage. PRESSED X A LOT --------------- Talk to people in the base. Also works by interacting with objects by pressing X when available. You'll get this by the third or second stage if you interact as much as possible. SHUT STAR UP ------------ Punch Star 15 times. Hit left trigger/X when Star bites Smiley's hand during the end of Stage 1 or Stage 10. TWO STOOD AGAINST MANY ---------------------- Complete the first genre. VIOLENCE SOLVES EVERYTHING -------------------------- Fire 125,000 Bullets. Two methods to do this, one's cheating. Either never stop shooting (forfeiting your accuracy bonus for every level) and play through each level roughly twice, or load up the first or second stage and leave the game running with a rubber band around the controller's right trigger. Come back in a few hours, you fire around 10,000 bullets per hour. ============================================================================ References [REFS] ============================================================================ Here's most of the pop culture references. Comix Zone Comic Zone was a Sega Genesis game where you jumped between panels of a comic book. While not directly referenced, this game was not doubt an influence to Comic Jumper. One gamer mentioned the resemblance between Comix Zone's main character and Brad, but the Concept Art shows this not to be true, demonstrating the progression of Brads style. Conan Novac bears resemblance to Conan the Barbarian, and has a similar accent to Arnold Swarzchenegar, who played him in what I presume to be the film adaption of the comic. Nanoc is also Conan spelt backwards. Crash Bandicoot The Saphos crystal bears resemblance to the pink crystals Crash needs to collect. Detective Comics Detective Comics is the classic comic that introduced Batman. Star refers to it in the second genre, saying "This isn't Detective Comics!" Final Fantasy VII Third genre Capt. Smiley bears a close resemblance to Cloud Strife, even bearing a smilar sword. Gauntlet Gerda says "Smiley needs food badly!", I presume this is said when your Gauntlet character needs health. Ghostbusters Mistress Ropes tells Captain Smiley to think of something, and that willl be his doom. The woman possessed by Gozer says this in Ghostbusters before the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is summoned. Jurassic Park The banner "Dinosaurs Ruled the World" is similar to one in Jurassic Park Karate Kid During 'Help Me's Captain Smiley says "Sweep the leg!" Kingdom for Keflings, A A Kefling statue is in the lounge area. Captain Smiley says he hates it and wants to kick it. Maniacal Smile, The Actually a real-life comic hero from fiercecomics. A crossover issue featuring Captain Smiley has been released. Meet The Maniacal Smile by visiting the basement near the later stages. Maw, The A scientist holding the Maw is shown on a billboard in the first stage. Megaman Captain Smiley's death is the same as how Megaman dies, bursting into an explosion of white orbs. Patrick Kane Looking at his trophies, Capt. Smiley asks where his trophy for beating up a cab driver in Buffolo is. Hockey player Patrick Kane beat up that cab driver, allegedly because the driver didn't have his 20 cents change. Powerpuff Girls One of the comic covers shows Capt. Smiley with girls who look like the Powerpuff Girls. Sin city One of the comic covers resembles the cover to a Sin City graphic novel. Splosion Man The last boss, Mr. Meatenstein, is directly from Splosion Man. Time Cop The Comic Jumper is the same time machine as the one in Time Cop. Total Recall Benny's Dialogue and drill machine come from the Benny in Total Recall. The achievement "He Ain't Even Married" is proably a reference to the film Benny being caught out, and not really having any "kids to feed". Resident Evil 4 Sometimes Winklemeyer willl say "What're you buying?" in a deeper voice, like the merchant from RE4. Star Trek During the 2nd genre, Star says "Star's log, stardate... don't know". Captain Picard used to begin every Star Trek episode with a smilar saying. Star Wars When fighting Brad, Captain Smiley says "This is just like Luke Skywalker on that ABB walker". Street Fighter NaNa and CoCo occasionally shout "Shoryuken", used by Ken and Ryu. Super Mario 64 On defeating Brad the second time you toss him into the horizon like Mario did to Bowser. Of course this had been done before, in cartoons and probably a bunch of Comics too. Others Apparently there are also references to Austin Powers and Back to the Future.
