  Troublshooting
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How do I get The Summoning to run in Windows XP?

A: Create a shortcut to setup.com in the Summon directory. In the properties
for that shortcut, go to the Compatibility tab and set the following
   settings:
-Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95
     -Check Run in 256 colors
-Check Run in 640x480 screen resolution
     -Check Disable visual themes

You also need to go to the Memory tab and set everything to Auto.
Run the setup.com shortcut. Select a mouse and sound card. For expanded
memory, increase it as far as it will go and then save the settings.

Next, create a shortcut to summon.com on your desktop. Go into properties
for that shortcut and set it just like the shortcut you made for setup.com.

Reboot your machine, while booting up keep hitting F8 until it takes you
into the operating system selection screen. Select VGA enabled mode. Now you
can run the game via the Summon shortcut on your desktop.

Q: Is there another way to get it to run?

A: Download DOSBox. It is a freeware DOS Emulator for many platforms.

Q: Anything else I should know?

A: While playing under Windows XP, the first time a sound file is played you
get a warning from Windows. This has no effect on the game except that when
you alt-tab out it tends to mess up the screen.

While playing under DOSBox, moving the subscreen all the way to the top
messes up the screen. Move it back down slightly to fix this.

While playing under DOSBox, the game occassionally crashes during
conversations with NPCs. You may want to save before conversing.

  Know Thy Controls
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some useful controls which you may not know.

-In game, click on your character portrait or press F10 to memorize spells.
Click the icons to the right of your portrait to see your hp, sp, ac, and
  encumbrance.
-Click & drag or press +/- to move the subscreen up and down. Click on the
green gem to change what it displays.
-Put container items like sacks, chests, and quivers in your character's left
  hand to view their contents.
-After you start the game, press 'o' (bring up options), click on "Game",
click on "Magnify", and turn it on. This makes items look the same on the
ground as in your inventory. It also means you never have to cast Sight.
-To speed up how quickly the game launches, press ESC before the 2 red bars
from the Event Horizon logo cross the center of the screen.
-The hotkey for the main menu is the letter 'o'
-Numbers 1-6 are hotkeyed to the orange gems (hand actions)
-F1-F4 are hotkeyed to the blue gems (spells)
-Right click or press 't' while standing on an item to quickly pick it up.
-Press enter while standing on a switch to quickly toggle it.
-Alt-C to center the screen on your character
-Alt-Q to quickly quit the game

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Character Creation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When creating your character, always choose "Allocate Attributes" since it
gives you the most overall points. You can keep clicking redo for a different
roll; I have seen rolls ranging from 68 to 114. However, you may be shocked at
how severe some of the disadvantages for low attributes are (I don't think the
designers eever expected anyone to have a stat below 10). I have tested to see
how low a character can go in each attribute and still be playable. First a
table, then I'll explain it.

Minimum recommended allocation to each attribute:
  Str: 20 Acc: 8
  Agi: 15 Tal: 12
  End: 10 Pow: 5 (Minimum allocation: 70)

STRENGTH (governs carrying weight and weapon damage)
-Having 20 still won't be enough to carry everything you want.

AGILITY (governs attack speed, dodging(?), and movement speed)
-There are move speed bonuses from 7-10, and at 15. If you don't get them all,
it doesn't make the game any harder, it just makes it boring.

ENDURANCE (governs fatigue)
-You need at least 10. As you fight long fights or push heavy objects, your
endurance drops temporarily. If either endurance or agility are below 10, you
move at the speed of the slower one.

ACCURACY (governs hit rate and projectile damage)
-The manual says this attribute primarily effects ranged weapons, but it's
not true. You need at least 8 accuracy or you will have a tough time hitting
anything.

TALENT (Governs how many spells you can memorize)
-It is frustrating to play with low talent, but not particularly harmful. If
you go below 12, you will realistically never get more than 1 memorization.

POWER (governs spell potency)
-I wouldn't go lower than 5 purely on the basis of the liquify spell. Casters
will want more. Power has a very minor effect on the duration of spells.

With extra points, I would recommend getting everything up to at least 12.
From there, Talent will have the most noticeable changes, while endurance and
agility will have the least noticeable.

Reasons to pick each Weapon or Magic Specialty...
-Long Edged: The best weapons in the game are swords
-Hacking: You start with a war axe, which is the best weapon among starters
-Pole Arms: Pole Arms are rare, so it helps raise a skill you can't otherwise
-Projectiles: You start with 5 extra arrows, and early game arrows are rare
-Wizardry: Wizardry has the most significance among magic skills
-Sorcery: You start with the Sight spell, which is the rarest among starters
-Enchantment: Enchantment is the toughest magic to level
-Healing: Boosts a spell you will use a ton

Personally, I prefer Pole Arms and Enchantment. My backups are Hacking and
Wizardry. I wouldn't get Edged Weapons because you're likely to master it
anyway, nor Sorcery because it affects few spells and rises quickly on its own.

  General Tips
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Save often. The survivability of rooms can can vary greatly, especially early
on in the game.

-Each time you clear a zone group (Beginner, Broken Seal, etc), bring all the
items you think you might want or need later and move them to the next section.
Then make a backup save. Hopefully you won't have to use it... but you might
have to use it.

-The following tips are modified from CMa's Summoning FAQ.

Basic tips:
1) Listen to all magic mouths (the impaled skulls) and NPCs
2) Complete all quests
3) Kill every monster
4) Explore every zone thoroughly

Basic puzzle solving tips:
5) Pick up every object
6) Look in all treasure chests
7) Cast Kano on every door
8) Unlock all object holes and keyholes
9) Toggle all levers (in various combinations)
(the initial state of a switch is when the lever is tilting to the left)
10) Weigh / Unweigh all depression tiles (in various combinations)
11) Look at palimpsest to see results of actions

Advanced puzzle solving tips:
12) Try teleporters twice
13) Use a Gebo, Raido, or Thurisaz rune (Raido and Thurisaz are limited)
14) Toss a heavy object to an unreachable plate
15) Toss an object or cast Kano at an unreachable teleporter
16) Cast Zap Away on large objects
17) Keep a Fehu rune handy in case you need to generate a specific item
18) If all else fails, use Boots of Levitation to bypass a plate or teleporter

If you get lost:
1) Keep going in teleporters until you reach one of the cross rooms (A or B).
2) Go in either of the North teleporters.
3) Go in the Southwest teleporter. If the room is cross shaped, then you
are in Room A. Otherwise you are in Room 7. It is also possible that you
are now in Room 10, outside the teleporter maze.

If you get lost: (alternate method)
1) If you are in a cross shaped room, take either of the North teleporters.
2) Take the Southwest teleporter. If you are no longer in a box shaped room,
you are either in Room A or out of the teleporter maze.
3) Take the Northwest teleporter.
4) Take the Southeast teleporter. If you are in a cross shaped room, it's Room
   B.
5) Take the Southwest teleporter. You are in one of the following rooms:
Outside the teleporter maze, Room 7, or Room A.

OTHERWORLD TELEPORTER MAZE
For this map, the first digit of a room is which row it is on, the second digit
signifies which column. You start in Room 11. Luckily, there are no alternating
teleporters this time.

There are 2 teleporters where "Outside" is written. You must disable them
by hitting a switch in Room 31.

  Sewer Map
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a representational map of the Citadel Sewers. It gives you the "main
idea" of where to go, but is not an exact map.

Why would I want to go to the sewers?
Really, there is no reason. You can't use your hands or magic (incl Bracers of
Regeneration) and get drained almost continuously. This makes most of the
enemies unkillable, so you get neither exp nor skill bonuses. The only treasure
is some scattered Nightshade and a Sack. If that sounds like fun to you, then
by all means, take on the sewers. Otherwise find a Messenger and enter the
Citadel directly.

Tips for traveling in the sewers:
-Bring several Algits, Rubies, and Sowelu Runes
-Maintain the Swiftness spell as often as possible
-This is the deadliest part of the game, so anything that you were saving for
later, you were saving for the sewers

The Entrance is at the bottom. The exit is the ">>To Citadel Basement".

This lists all runed teleportation sites in the game as well as the general
purpose of the destination. Zones are labeled by their palimpsest names. Note
that the numbers are not in the same order as the order that you visit them.

KEY
Required: You must teleport to this destination at some point
Bypass: You can reach the destination without the rune, but the rune will save
  you time and effort
Bonus: Takes you to a bonus zone where there is no other means of access
Hub: Takes you to a central location, often useful when you are trapped
???: I couldn't figure out what this teleporter site was for (so... Bonus?)

  Typed Dialogue
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section contains all of the keywords that you must manually type in, and
who to say them to. The game only looks at the first 4 letters of a keyword.

-Malacai, The first NPC in the game: coins, zebu
(zebu is a cheat, but it won't work if you have already asked about coins)
-Darius, King of Thieves: sword
-Rhegad, Holy Man: cross
-Spectre, Green Knight's realm: zarf
-Ogotai, Genie's Lamp salesman: four
(due to a bug, the lamp still costs 10 coins)
-Firefang, One of the Eight Skulls: warmonger
(says different things depending on whether you have Warmonger in your
  inventory or not)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  Unsolved Mysteries
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a list of things that I botched while I was making this FAQ. I list
them here because they may be important to the accuracy of the FAQ, and also
for personal reference so I can look for these things the next time I play
through the game.

1) In the one of the Knight's Realms, I found an extra Round Key which I never
   used
2) In End 2, I found an extra Sun Key which I never used
3) In the Lava Level, I found an Iron Token which I never used (it seems to
be useful in Shadow Weavers Lair but I doubt that's the intended purpose)
4) In Otherworld 3, I missed the key for the first door on the right
5) In Otherworld 3, I never figured out the purpose of sticking both Cross
Keys that are on top of each other into the same keyhole (before you ask,
this is not related to the above quandry)
6) At the top of Otherworld 2, I couldn't figure out how to get past a ring of
   teleporters without Boots of Leviation
7) In Citadel Floors 2-3, I never figured out what the Raido Rune sites were
   for
8) I never got inside the Jester Armory
