All-Japan Women's Pro Wrestling FAQ v1.1 13 April 2001 by Jason "Da Clyde" Presley (daclyde@usa.net) Contents 1) Introduction 2) Menus/Options 3) Game Play 4) Strategy 5) Basic Controls 6) Move Lists 7) Version History 8) Closing Comments/Acknowledgements *************************************** 1) INTRODUCTION *************************************** The game is a bit limited in scope; your only available options are fighting exhibition matches or fighting for the title. No create a wrestler, no tag matches, no battle royals, no weapons. However, lack of elaborate features aside, it's very well done and easily has some of the (if not THE) best graphics of any Playstation wrestling game (with only All Japan Pro Wrestling: King's Soul as the other possible best looking game). The women are VERY well rendered (they actually look like women! Keep in mind this came out BEFORE WWF Smackdown! and has the graphics in the Yukes games beaten solidly) and very well animated. While it is not chock full of hidden characters (it's got 1) or secret moves, as far as playability goes, it stands up to most games on the market. By the way, if you find that I've misnamed any moves, please email me at daclyde@usa.net with the correct name and I'll get it fixed ASAP. *************************************** 2) MENUS/OPTIONS *************************************** As with many Japanese games, use CIRCLE to select and X to cancel or back up a screen. For all YES/NO confirmation screens, YES is always on the left, NO is always on the right. WWWA RANKING MATCH (Career Mode) ---NEW GAME Character Selection There are initially 13 characters to choose from and one hidden wrestler freed up upon beating the WWWA Ranking mode. Choose with CIRCLE (or TRIANGLE for different ring gear). In order from top to bottom, left to right: Yumiko Hotta Manami Toyota Takako Inoue Kaoru Ito Tomoko Watanabe Kumiko Maekawa Aja Kong Kyoko Inoue Mima Shimoda Etsuko Mita Chaparrita Asari Rie Tamada Yumi Fukawa Akira Hokuto (Hidden, available in Challenge only) ---DATA LOAD CHALLENGE MATCH (Exhibition match) ---1P vs 2P Fall by 3 Count Fall by Knock Out (10 count...it's VERY difficult to keep someone down for a 10, but players can still submit or be counted out) ---1P vs COM (player picks CPU opponent) ---COM vs COM (good for seeing the various moves) OPTION ---COM LV (difficulty) EASY NORMAL (default) HARD ---SOUND STEREO (default) MONO ---TIME 10:00 20:00 30:00 (default) ---MOVIE (ring entrances) ON (default) OFF ---EXIT Options cannot be saved. When the console is turned off, all options reset to the defaults. *************************************** 3) GAME PLAY *************************************** At the top of the match screen, you have 2 important items: 1) Damage locator - consisting of 3 sections (head, torso, legs) this indicator tells you how much damage is being done to the three sections of the players' bodies. It starts with all sections WHITE for OK, then changes to YELLOW for slightly worn and RED for hurt. Every move in the game affects only one of the three body sections. If any of your opponent's indicator is red, you might start laying in the submissions: sleepers, headlocks and rear chinlocks for the head; armbars, sharpshooters, crabs for the torso; leglocks and figure fours for the legs. 2) Finisher Bar - Not an indicator of your character's stamina, but more like how over you are with the crowd. This bar increases by surviving moves, escaping pins and submissions and appealing to the crowd. At about 2/3rds full, the bar will start flashing and enables you to perform your finisher. For the purposes of the statistics in the Career Mode, once the bar is activated, almost any power move will be considered a finisher, not just the character's signature move. *************************************** 4) STRATEGY *************************************** Here are some general strategies that apply to all characters. You start out with your basic kick move and punch move while standing, running or while your opponent is running at you. When the match starts, you must wear down your opponent to be able to pull off any of the wrestler's actual moves. Wear Her Down The early minutes of the match will consist mostly of punches, chops, kicks whips and the occasional back body drop. If you try to stand directly in front of your opponent and trade punches, you'll most likely end up getting pounded. Take the occasional shot, but here is where you should be doing a bunch of running moves and moves from the Irish Whip. Also, try to time your opponent's strikes. If she kicks or punches and misses, move in close, get a shot in and back away to try it again. You can also use strikes out of the grapple, but unless you can get the timing right, more often than not, you opponend will hit you. Don't bother to try to hit her from a grapple. Instead, always try to whip her into the ropes if you are in a grapple. That gives you control and a chance to lay some damage on her with a back elbow, clothesline, kick or one of your O button moves. Until some real damage is done, you'll be doing a LOT of strikes and whips. The Stagger The first stage of wearing your opponent down is the stagger. After a few strikes, your opponent will wobble for about a second or so. While you can't yet perform a move on her, you have a chance to get in an extra, unopposed strike. You have to be quick, though as the stagger doesn't last long and sometimes your strike might put your staggered opponent JUST beyond your reach. Stunned Usually, following the stagger, you'll get to a stun. Your opponent is stunned when she is just standing still and waving back and forth a little. Watch for this as this is where you can start using your grapple moves. If you strike her while she's stunned, she'll snap out of it and be back in control. Every wrestler has about five moves from the front and 5 from the back when your opponent is stunned. Not everyone has different moves for every direction and button combo. You can also still punch and kick while they're stunned, but that's a waste of a perfectly good stun. Some moves can be reversed...(the scoop slam into a small package, anything in the shoulders into a victory roll, and almost anything else into a Fujiwara armbar, piledriver into a back drop) or blocked (DDT, powerbombs). Opponent Down When she's just being stunned early in the match, she'll probably get up rather quickly after the move is over. But later in the match, after laying your opponent out with a powerbomb or scoop slam, move in for a submission, stomp or elbow drop. Each wrestler has a submission from the head and feet. Stomps and elbow drops against a downed opponent do about what a strike does to a stunned opponent...wakes them up. But a submission requires them to break the hold or get to the ropes. The longer the hold is on, the more damage is done, so try to apply submission near the center of the ring. The Corner If you whip your opponent into the corner (you and she must be facing diagonally in the ring) you have some options. You can use a running attack, or you can put her up on the top turnbuckle and attempt a move on her from there. Just like the stunned moves, some of these moves can be blocked giving your opponent a chance to dive off the turnbuckle at you. Be selective of your moves. Outside the Ring If you end up on the outside of the ring, you've got to the count of 20 to get back inside. Use this time wisely. Some wrestlers have moves from the top turnbuckle to the outside. This is also a way to end a match quickly. Generally, as soon as you can, whip your opponent into the rail and hopefully get a stun. If you do get a stun, try to pull off a move and whip her again and get back in the ring before the 20. If you do, you can end a match in under 2 minutes. Other Tips Take advantage of the body part damage meter. If your opponent's head is read, lay in the sleepers, piledrivers and choke slams. You get the idea. If your wrestler has any quick pin moves, keep those in mind, you might need them late in the match if you're getting pounded. All the wrestlers have unique characteristics. Aja Kong is very powerful, but at the same time, her strikes are very slow. If she's swinging at you, you can probably hit her first. Yumiko Hotta has very quick jabs and strong kicks that are great for softening up an opponent. Kumiko Maekawa has deadly kicks that can level any opponent in short order, but at the same time, she doesn't have much stamina. Kyoko Inoue and Akira Hokuto are very tough and take a lot of punishment before they stun and also deliver some punishing moves. Yumi Fukawa is quick, but, like Maekawa, has very little stamina. *************************************** 5) BASIC CONTROLS *************************************** For the purposes of this FAQ, I'll try to follow conventional abbreviations, so X for the X-button S for the Square T for the Triangle O for the Circle Directions will be indicated by U, D, L, R for Up, Down, Left & Right L/R means Left or Right D-Pad - moves your character around (no analong in this game) Ready Moves S - punch X - kick O - grapple T - nothing L1 - appeal to crowd D-Pad toward corner + R1 - run/ring out/climb turnbuckle (Facing Out) R/L/U/D + R1 - climb turnbuckle (Facing In) L2+R2 - activate finisher bar (it'll flash red and player will yell to the crowd) In Grapple S - punch X - kick O - Irish Whip/toss opponent out (opponent is whipped the opposite direction from which you point the D-Pad) T - nothing Running S - move with arms (character specific) X - move with legs (character specific) R1 - catch ropes, regain control after being whipped to ropes (toward corner) R1 - Drop Kick from Corner Against Stunned Opponent (front or back give different moves for O & T) S - punch X - kick O - power move L or R + O - power move U + O - power move D + O - power move T - submission move R1 to release hold Opponent On Ground S - elbow drop X - stomp O - pin T - submission (different move at head facing up or down or feet) R1 to release hold R1 - pick up opponent Opponent In Corner R1 - put opponent on turnbuckle facing ring D-pad + R1 - put opponent on turnbuckle facing out Opponent On Top Turnbuckle O - Perform move against opponent Player on Top Turnbuckle R1 - jump down S/X - Move off the top Move Toward Ropes to Break Submission S - Left X - Down O - Right T - Up D-Pad - R and L rotate your body clockwise or counter-clockwise *************************************** 6) MOVE LISTS *************************************** To perform Finishers, when Finisher Bar is blinking green, hit L2 & R2 at the same time. Women's wrestling is a serious affair in Japan and I can only pray that some of it rubs off on the USA. If anyone has read my review of the game on GameFaqs...well, consider that a first impression. I didn't really give the game much of a chance. Now that I've written this FAQ, my respect for this game and for the amazing women in Japan has grown considerably. I had to do a ton of research to put this thing together. It wasn't a simple task to match up faces for 14 wrestlers I was completely unfamiliar with, not to mention trying to put a name with some of the awesome Japanese moves. Fortunately, a whole new area of the internet opened up to me as I found some GREAT sites to show me the way: Michiku Pro http://www.cherrybabe.com/michiku/ Features a wealth of information on Japanese women's wrestling, the most valuable to me was the highly detailed Profiles section with pictures and bios of all of the women in this game. Women's Wrestling Illustrated http://womens-pro-wrestling.com/ While a bit sloppy with the HTML, this is a great site about women's wrestling all over the world. These people give women's wrestling better treatment than any of the crappy men's wrestling internet rumor mills out there. If only more men's wrestling sites would take note. WrestleReference Online http://www.ishmael.f9.co.uk/ Quite literally an encyclopedia of wrestling moves. AJWPW contained a bunch of moves I'd never heard of or seen (Pyramid Driver, Hell Smasher, Niagara Driver to name a few). The site has full text descriptions of nearly every move as well as many animations, video clips and pictures. It also lists variations, who uses the moves and other names given to the moves. GameFaqs.com http://www.gamefaqs.com Hey, they're the original host of this FAQ, and if it hadn't been for them not already having one, I'd've never written this!
